photos using incandescent bulbs

jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 10,589 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have always used incandescent bulbs and never had a yellow overcast look

to the pics. Now I started using two incandescent bulbs and the yellow overcast

has appeared.

Does this matter re:closeness of camera, just the type of bulbs or what, as I am using the same camera as before the overcast occurred.

Probably a dumb question but not a photo wiz.

Thank you,

Jim

If you figure out how to set your white balance it will fix most of this. Incandescent bulbs aren't all alike.

You will have to adjust your white balance.

I don't know what it really looks like, obviously. But clearly your WB setting is off.

You can fix this with your camera's setting. Or deal with it post-processing.

I think all/most modern digital cameras have several white balance settings these days (including "incandescent", "fluorescent", "shade", "bright sunlight" etc.).
I never thought that growing old would happen so fast.

Yeah, Lance, I thought so. Had this coin for a couple of years before I noticed them last fall. Not a Mercury specialist, so didn't look for anything like that.

    Thanks

Without knowing what type of camera box your using, I can't help ya. If your using an SLR then you can set your white balance and for sure this will help, but you must be in your manual mode to do so.
I like this Mercury dime your showing Jim, great luster and I see some a that pretty green toning I like so much peeking through. It's a beaut, as always with your great eye.
    Take care my friend.

It's nothing fancy, Joe. Just a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS. Did not have this problem until lately. Must have changed something. AUTO always did fine until recently when the yellowing appeared. Switched to P mode and incandescent and it cured the yellowing.

    Thanks all,

  • My unsolicited advice is to consider using natural sunlight when it is at an angle. Hard to beat.

Not all incandescent bulbs are made alike. Back in the day, they used to have specialty light bulbs at certain color temperatures that were only good for a number of hours. (These would match a particular type of film.)

You may still find a hue change across your photos, even white balanced if the bulbs are of different types and/or ages. Try two brand new identical light bulbs if that happens.

taking excellent, not just acceptable images of all types of coins is probably the most difficult thing for a coin collector. settings sometimes change from one coin to the next due to the ambient lighting.
usually it is not the price of the camera that decides on a excellent image. It boils down to the patience a collector has to experiment with the camera and to keep track of every shots details while experimenting.
after that, usually a piece of cake. I have taken thousands of coin pictures and get acceptable results using a low cost Canon Body and a costly true 90 mm macro lens.
Camera is directly connected via USB to my PC and I use the mouse for all adjustments. Monitor is my viewfinder.
Today is the first day of the rest of my life

I wish my Canon would had monitor connectivity but it does not. Thanks for everyones input. Hopefully I will improve.

    .

you are positive it doesn't have the option for tethering?

id google search at least, to verify.

i use clear reveal bulbs and i switched to the little ones. you can easily close your hand around one. i use 2 of em. no diffusion 99% of the time. no auto-focus. i despise it unless i am lazy and once it focuses, i switch back to manual. significantly decreases time, i don't care how fast you a.f. is.

fast shutter and some experience with xf and below coins, you could do thousands in a day with no effort. put your feet up and use your tether to ensure focus is still good. the camera vibrations from the mirror seem to knock it out of focus a bit sometimes.

    Lance,

When I first got the camera, I emailed Canon regarding this issue and was answered my exact model did not tether. I googled this very question 6 months ago and was advised on a camera forum that no, the powershot could not tether due to a technicality in its software. It can store and display photos on a monitor but cannot be controlled by a computer.

    Digital camera's don't understand white.

If you can set it in your camera, try that otherwise you have to adjust it in post postproduction.
