PSA wrapper grading

I know this subject has been broached here a few times before, but wondering what it might take to have PSA take a real look at wrapper grading/authentication?

A few points of this dialogue that have been brought up previously -

The slab - Wondering if perhaps the existing T3 size slab wouldn't also be able to house most "folded out" wrappers? A plastic insert could be used for smaller wrappers, and this would also allow for larger (i.e. vintage, tallboy) and odd size (pre war) wrappers to be slabbed. Presumably one less barrier to entry for PSA to foray into this market?

The grading - Thinking this would be similar to pack grading/authentication?

The potential market - There are a number of people who have expressed interest in this previously, and the untapped market could be significant. Look at how the unopened and ticket markets skyrocketed after PSA entered the market. With the popularity of the PSA registry, and the relative scarcity of some of these wrappers (just try and find vintage hockey or basketball wrappers), a "Master Topps Wrapper" registry competition could become pretty popular. Another revenue stream for PSA!

Would be cool to see this get some consideration. I'd be first in line with my wrappers!

Can't see it happening unless they can incorporate it into an existing holder design. Not worth the expense of developing a prototype for what would be an extremely limited market.

Agreed on the slab Tim - I also think it would have to be an existing holder (i.e. the T3, which is the largest I think) to make entry worthwhile. Also, too many wrapper size variables not to have a standard slab.

There are a fair number of wrapper collectors out there when considering all avenues (non-sport included). Also thinking the pool might expand if a reputable authenticator/grader like PSA were to enter the market.

I think it would be kind of cool for rarer, vintage wrappers. I don't see anyone bothering to spend submission fees on anything after the early to mid 1970s, though, with maybe some exceptions for tough issues or very pricey packs like 1986 Fleer basketball.

Are counterfeit wrappers really an issue? I'd think we all can tell whether a wrapper is authentic or not. The big reason for card/pack authentication is determining if the card is real and if the pack has been tampered with.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it, and would collect slabbed wrappers. I know you collect Superman 1940 Mars and I think those wrappers would look amazing slabbed!

I think there are some counterfeits/reprint wrappers on the market, although agree they are pretty easy to spot. I have a bunch of vintage sports and non sport wrappers I'd love to get slabbed.

Here's that Superman wrapper for you Patrick - Probably an EX 5 or EX-MT 6

A while back. GAI has been out of business for a while, now.

  • I think wrapper grading would have a certain nastalgic feeling to it that differs from card grading. It would remind us more of the potential of what's inside. Kinda cool to have something like that in a slab.

We could TRIM them to fit in an existing '52 Topps Baseball card holder.
PLUS the corners would be MINT! Just sayin' . . . .
