New collector

I am new to the baseball card collecting hobby. I am in my 50s with many family obligations who still need to put kids to college. Discretionary income is a factor. With that being said I am interested in collecting the baseball Hall of Fame rookie cards with the exception of the 1900 stars as well as the rookie mantle Satchel Paige and Matthews. I fear is that the cards will lose value over time when it is time to sell them. Even though I see this to some extent as an investment it is mainly a hobby but it can become very expensive. I would also like to collect three or four cards for most Hall of Famer's besides their rookie cards

Not sure I understand your reasons for collecting. If you think anything is going to lose money over time, don't do it. How much "discretionary income" do you have?

I would suggest buying graded cards. PSA seems to have the best reputation for cards printed in the 1950's and newer.

Hall of Fame rookie cards have proven to be good investments. Some players have valuable cards that are not their rookie cards, second year cards are usually pretty good "investments" as well as "short prints" like the 1963 Topps #500 Harmon Killebrew card. 1962 and 1971 are years that seem to have more value in top condition because of condition sensitivity.

Certain players are hotly collected, Roberto Clemente comes to mind. There are some great players that are not outrageously priced; Billy Williams and Frank Robinson might be two to look at.

Collect what you can afford and the players you like. If your cards do not increase in value, you have still had fun and not broken the bank.

    Good luck and have fun!

Put together a VGEX - EX 1953 Topps Set. You get Mantle, Paige and Matthews.
Kiss me once, shame on you.
    Kiss me twice.....let's party.

That reminds of the '92 National in Atlanta.

PSA was just getting off the ground and a guy had a 53T Mantle PSA 8 for $3200.

    I thought: "wow! that's a lotta dough!"

What the hell did "I" know?

I would throw 1975 in there too...pretty much any card that has a colored/patterned bordered.

  • Sorry. I am just a caveman and new to the ways of your strange world. Your world frightens and confuses me. When I see these little men trapped in a small cardboard prison makes me want to run into the hills.
