Has Anyone Done Business With This Dealer in Indiana?

A few weeks ago I posted a want ad on Collector's Universe and a dealer from Ft. Wayne, Indiana responded. His name is Greg Washington and his business name is Greg's Card Shack. On this forum he goes by Greg Wash. Without going into detail yet, let's say the transaction is not going smoothly; thus my query. Your feedback is greatly appeciated.

  • Fort Wayne is only an hour and a half from my house. That said, I haven't heard of Greg. I do have some friends in the hobby locally that might know of him though.

I had made an arrangement to purchase a 09 Heritage Jeter variation and a 11 V. Guerrero variation. I made the payment through PayPal, but the cards never appeared. I had to file a case and I'm getting a refund, but I much rather preferred the cards. He calls his business Greg's Card Shack and he told me that he mostly does shows. The way the transaction was developing didn't seem right. I do like to give other people the benefit of the doubt, but in this case I had to conclude the cards were not going to show up. Thank you for your response and please let me know if there's any more information.

  • You are 100% correct that the package was not delivered to you. You did leave out a couple details that might be important for those who may have formed an unjust opinion. I did email you taking full responsibility for the mishap. I did not send it properly tried cutting a corner and led to the mishap. I tried to add a signature confirmation slip with stamps at the after hours lobby. As I have learned I'm not supposed to and didn't put enough stamp postage on it. I had another one that was returned for the same thing. That member was refunded the day he asked. Your claim sparked my account to be limited and I couldn't voluntarly send a refund after that. I sent an email saying the same thing. I did not try to block your claim nor respond to it cause you were due it. Your biggest hang up was the slip thinking there was more than 20 numbers which the physical slips do only have 20. I do not want it to seem like I tried to screw you over. Was it my fault? Yes totally. I was wrong and should've done it differently. They are not easy cards to find and both were pictured in the same picture. I shipped albeit wrongly only 1 day after what I quoted you. Like I told you totally my fault and I own up to that. No excuses. I shouldn't have done it that way but I didn't have any ill intent and didn't spend any of the money. Just wanted to share the full stupid honest side of it. All my fault 100%.

That sounds like one of the most stand-up, fully accountable responses to a foul up I've ever heard on this board

I may be missing something but if the cards were returned to the sender for incorrect postage why could they not have been reshipped with the correct postage? Bottom line a deal was made but not fulfilled. It seems the buyer still wishes to acquire the cards. If you are such a standup seller why not make that happen?

I agree with Dennis. It seems the cards were returned to seller. There was a deal made and the buyer clearly would rather have the cards than a refund. A stand up, honest seller would simply reship the cards, unless for some reason he is experiencing sellers remource. Be honest and ship the buyer his cards. A deal is a deal

  • Craig and Dennis. I got them back Saturday after his money was returned. I have no issue working something out with Phil. There is no seller remorse his offer was very generous and they don't mean anything special to me unlike what they mean to him. I even added some extra heritage short prints to it since I shipped a day later than quoted. If Phil would like to still purchase he can email me and I'd be more than willing to work with him.

Sounds good. Maybe the OP can post a final outcome later.

Trying to be fair, I will give an account of my situation. I have emails to prove any claim I make in the following.

A few weeks ago, I made arrangements to purchase a lot of Destination Honolulu inserts from the aforementioned "greg's card shack". We agreed on a price of $325 for the lot. I paid on a Friday and was told cards would ship priority on Monday. On Thursday, cards did not arrive, so I sent an email asking when they had been sent. I was told there was an incident relating to a damaged car at church and was told they were sent out Tuesday instead. Saturday came and the cards did not arrive. I was told they were put in the "night deposit box" with signature confirmation and was given a tracking number (which never appeared on the USPS tracking via the website or via a relative who can see the inside tracking information at the PO). After another week, I requested a refund and was given a refund that evening.

As in the other case, I would have rather had the cards than the refund. If the buyer was out to get someone, I dont think they would have voluntarily offered the refund. I was covered anyway and did not have to file a claim. It sounds to me like a case of not knowing the right way to mail an item. I will leave that up to you guys to decide

Edited to add: Greg is correct in mentioning the first delay of a couple of days due to my address not showing up on a paypal payment. Having purchased on ebay for so long, I dont think I have had to give my address out in 20 years

That sounds like a fair offer Greg. It is beginning to sound like there is a trend of less than happy customers though.

I have a whole other theory to all of this but it would involve me outing another seller to prove the point and I don't want to get banned.

  • Danny is the other member I mentioned. The first little bit went by without having his address. He paid PayPal gift and no shipping info was provided. He is correct with the delay on the quoted shipping day. That sunday night I had a brake line bust and spent the quoted shipping day getting the entire brake system replaced. Hence the 1 extra day. His was dropped off in the same way and time as Phil's. As both were aware of I am new to online selling and tried to cut a corner. Totally my fault 100%. I have apologized to both and tried to assure both I meant nothing bad and made a bad call on the way I shipped. Danny did tell me something similar has happened to him with a package being returned for being pocket change under postaged. He said he understood and knew I wasn't trying to screw him over. If either would still like to work something out on their purchases I'd be willing to work with them if they wish. If not I understand. I messed it up and offer no excuses. Lesson learned don't try to cut corners and physically Mail things not at the after hours lobby. If the powers that be here would like me to leave let me know and I will. I messed up totally.
  • Looks like the seller made some honest rookie mistakes which he has owned up to. I'm going to assume both mistakes were made simultaneously.

Hopefully it was a case of simple ignorance on shipping rates and standards, which can and should always be fixed, and not a case of continuing stubbornness to learn from one's mistake. I'm guessing that it's not the latter.

TIP: I like buying my shipping labels directly from PayPal to avoid any headache or confusion. You can do it now for any reason, not necessarily on just a goods/service payment.

I would be more than happy to try once again. However, I have three points where I felt things weren't going smoothly. When I ordered the cards, I provided the seller my name, address, phone number, my eBay i.d. and a way of identifying who I was on-line as I don't have a social media page. Next, the signature confirmation number he provided me didn't work when I checked USPS. He did offer to send me photos of the package, but when I asked him to send me the number once again I didn't hear from him again until I filed a case with PayPal.

I am not trying to besmirch Greg's name or reputation; if any of you had dealings with him and were satisfied then kudos to him. When I did an on-line search for someone by that name in the Ft. Wayne area as well as looking under Greg's Card Shack and I didn't see anything, I began to wonder and decided to err on the side of caution and contact PayPal. Had the package been delivered after the refund he would have still received the money as I really want the cards for my sets and it's better to treat people fairly. Greg, I didn't know the cards had been returned to you. I will contact you away from this forum. To those of you who gave your feedback, thank you and I'll get you know if there's a "storybook ending."
