  • Completely crazy if you ask me. I love the card but it's gotten ridiculous.

The last 9 selling for nearly $500k will pull everything else up. We are seeing that now. The heritage one still has a ways to go imo.

WOW. This card sold for what 5 grand a few years ago?

Should the 1955 Clemente PSA 8 be worth more than a 1954 Aaron PSA 8? Population report and condition sensitivity aside, personally, I always thought the Aaron rookie should be more valuable than the Clemente rookie. But right now Clemente PSA 8 is selling for more than twice the Aaron. I suspect the Clemente is harder to find in an 8 and a quick check of the pop report after I post this is in order.

Clemente is the "rarer" of the two cards in PSA 8, with Clemente PSA 8 population at about 67% of the Aaron PSA 8 population with only 3% less total Clemente cards graded (see pop report details below).

BTW, the Heritage Clemente PSA 8 is now at $95,600 with BP (and the PSA 7 is now at $19,120 with BP). Both end tomorrow. Will the PSA 8 break $100K?

And FWIW, if Clemente PSA 8s are now averaging about $73K I think there is still reasonable upside in the Aaron PSA 8 which is now in the mid $32k-$34k range. Based
on the populations and recent Clemente prices the Aaron PSA should start moving toward a support price in the low-mid $40s.

Totally agree Dave. Aaron has room to go. And yes I think the heritage 8 will go well above $100k

What is a reasonable percentage price drop in going from a 9 to an 8...and an 8 to a 7 in this card?

    PSA-9 ~$478k
    PSA-8 ~$120k (25% x PSA 9)
    PSA-7 ~$30k (25% x PSA 8)

For a Clemente RC...20 to 25 percent of the next highest whole grade?

For a Aaron RC...recent sales in going from a 9 to an 8

    PSA 9 $273000
    PSA 8 $42000

For an Aaron RC...it is ~15 percent. Hence...the feeling that the Aaron RC in an 8 has room to move?

Jeff called it last summer on Aaron and Clemente. One of us was not smart enough to take his advice and buy them when I had the chance image

Haha. But you got the biggest one though.
Btw Clemente is now up to $113k

this has gone way past collecting and become investing

maybe I am a fool but when collectibles values become totally driven by investing, when the music stops, some serious pain ensues.

I don't feel bad for the guys who get stuck with the high end stuff for nutty prices, I feel for the common collector who had to buy a psa 3 for the price of what psa 6/7's were/should be selling for. then again the collector will be happy no matter what

I will definitely agree on that point. Whoever bought the Goodwin Clemente back in November has to be very happy today. The Goodwin one was outstanding in all respects, and was a pre .5 grading - think it has a chance to bump. If not it has seen a nice $60-80k increase in price.

Updated price on the Heritage Auction: $131,450.00

Seems odd that the 3 other auctions I listed were in the $60-70k range, and the heritage one is double that and not finished....although that one is nicely centered.

This question is not directly related to the Clemente, but how the auction process works on these sites. They have an end time, but I always see discussion about bids coming in after the clock hits zero. Can anyone explain how there's an "overtime" period on these sites?
  • PSASAPPSASAP Posts: 2,284 ✭✭✭
Most auction houses use the "15 minute rule", which means that, after the auction is closed to new bids, there is an overtime. This overtime will last as long as there is a bid raise on any of the items in the auction, and the auction clock will count down from 15 minutes to zero. If there are no bid raises on any item in the auction for 15 minutes, the auction is officially over. However, the clock keeps being reset as bid raises are entered. The only bidders who are allowed to raise bids are those who made an initial bid during the regulation time of the auction.

Thanks for the explanation. How you described it makes sense.

It looks like the best "bargains" might be the Aaron RC and the PSA 8 Willie (when you compare the price difference between an 8 and a 9), although, the 8 looks like it has a slant.

Have to agree on Aaron PSA 8 being the current bargain.

The average price of a Clemente RC in PSA 8 based on the recent sales (last few weeks) is now $80,419!

    SCP 4/24 $73,409
    Memory Lane 5/8 $61,200
    Mile High 5/6 $68,018
    Mile High 5/6 $68,018
    Heritage 5/12 $131,450

The average price of an Aaron RC in PSA 8 during the same period is now $42,214!

    Mile High 5/6 $38,129
    REA 5/1 $48,000
    Heritage $40,630
    PWCC 5/10 $42,100

Many of these sales were for cards with above average eye-appeal, centering, etc.

With the Clemente population about 2/3 of the Aaron population (about 180 Aarons versus 120 Clementes), but a price difference of close to 50% it would suggest the Aaron RC probably has another $8k-$10k of appreciation in order to be relatively valued.

As for the Aaron PSA 9 (sold 5/8 for $228,000) it seems like it is starting to get very close to its relative valuation versus the Clemente PSA 9 ($478,000 in Feb 2016 at Heritage). There are twice as many Aarons at this level versus Clemente, so a price of about 50% ($239,000) is not unrealistic.

Anyone want to bet that we see an Aaron PSA 8 sell for over $50k by the time National ends this year?

As long as someone will take a 3rd party out of state temporary check I will be a buyer at $50k image I agree that we will see that card(Aaron) run up in price some more providing it has decent centering - Aaron rookies and most 54's are plagued with poor eye appeal due to centering and tilt issues.

Amazing thing about Clemente is that he only hit 20 or more HR's in a season 3 times during his career while winning 4 batting titles and one MVP. Imagine a player today with those numbers and how they would be discussed amongst the great players. I think the fact that he was the greatest Latin American player along with the greatest defensive outfielder is what elevates him up there with Mays and Aaron.

As well as in the manner in which he passed away. This added to his legacy.

This and his fanbase are rabid versus Aaron fans in general. There are very passionate collectors.

Very true. Clemente was a great humanitarian and died in a plane crash taking aid to victims of an earthquake in Nicaragua. This was something he usually did in the offseason, and one of the reasons he was so revered by players and fans. I read his story a while back and very interesting read about how he grew up and started playing ball. A very caring man who happened to also be a great player as well. Agree that being the greatest Latin ball player also adds to his legacy.

Without Clemente, the favored Baltimore Orioles would've won the 71 World Series. Fans never forget World Series heroes.
