1989 Upper Deck

Just broke a low series box. Why do they call it a low series box when there are 700 cards, LOL.
Did these boxes come sealed are not? The packs are tamper proof, correct? Not only did I not get a Griffy, Jr. but there were no star rookies. Yet some cards I got 4's and 5's of. Just seems odd. I though these UD boxed were supposed to have great collation?

It was very easy to find the Griffeys so sounds like someone searched your box and took
all the Star Rookies for resale?

I have always heard just the opposite, that collation was pretty bad on those boxes.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

I've opened 3 FASC boxes from BBCE. Two boxes had a single Griffey apiece and the last didn't have any.

At their current price point, I can see no benefit to opening a box unless you are doing so for the experience.

The 3 boxes you opened FASC, were they shrink wrapped from the factory? Thanks!

The 1989 Upper Deck boxes weren't shrink wrapped from the factory.

PSA 9's of Griffey are under $50(I think).
    PSA 9 Johnson's are around $12. Biggio under $10.

Theres an overabundance of all of those. I don't understand breaking this product.

    Collation was notoriously awful.

Oh and for what its worth,

36 packs per box, 15 cards per pack.

    so 540 cards per box.

    Set is 700 cards.

You will not average 1 Griffey per box with the x factor being terrible coallation.

Even if there was perfect collation, one out of every 4 or 5 boxes would not have a Griffey.

I remember busting those packs when I was 14 in 1989, the collation was terrible! I do agree what Dogerfanjohn said BUT, if you're just busting some older wax for fun, nothing wrong with that! image

On a side note, that 1989 UD was mass produced just like the other brands. Heck, they where printing sheets of just the Griffey's. It's defiantly a landmark set for the sports card industry. Don't forget all the Dale Murphy REV NEG's and Griffey's going out the back door! Anyhow, anytime I read about 89' Upper Deck, I think about the previous statement.

During BBCE group breaks I'd pick up 2-3 packs of UD, and saved em up until I had about 12 packs and a rainy day. Busted em all and I seriously only came out with about 5 cards that excited me at all. If I remember correctly, they were Canseco, Boggs, Mattingly, Ryan, and Yount. As others said, your better off just grabbing a Griffey in a 9 off eBay (I think the prices of those have gone up a little bit now that his 10's are goin for close to 400).

OMG that is nice but I would hate to be the friend standing next to you that bought the other 8 packs.

Why do the complete factory sets go for so cheap?

The Griffey is almost always dinged a bit in the factory sets. I honestly still can't believe this card still commands the prices it does. It's gotta be just based on legend/mystique. It's definitely an iconic card, but come on.........they're EVERYWHERE

I bought a box from BBCE that was the same way several years ago. Got none of the Rookies at all. I called BBCE about it and they said it was not unusual. They did offer me a credit for the box anyways though.

If you assume perfect collation (and I agree it's a big assumption), you can use binomial probabilities to calculate the likelihood of pulling a unique card -- in this case Griffey.
    -
    With 540 chances and a 1/700 chance for each card, the probabilities are as follow;
    -
    0 Griffeys = 46.2%
    1 Griffey = 35.7%
    2 Griffeys = 13.8%
    3 Griffeys = 3.5%
    4 or more Griffeys = 0.8%

I bought a lot of 15 Griffeys for about 300 a few years ago, went through em all, pulled the ones I thought had shots at a 10, and came back with a 9, 2 8.5s, 8. I loved that card as a kid. That and the Canseco rookies were the holy grail for all 10-12 year olds and I was fortunate enough to have em both. When I got the lot I posted a pic on facebook of all 15, and my friends all flipped out.

I keep asking myself if I should sell off those and try and get a 10 because the price keeps jumping, or just keep the 9 and remind myself how hard it was to come up with a perfect one of the 15 I had bought, and use the money to buy other cards. Though prices may have leveled off since he's been inducted (but could climb more when we approach HOF weekend).

It was late on a Saturday night and I was in ripping mood, so the '89 UD bit the dust. :} Only had $65 in it so it wasn't too bad Come to think about it, I don't think I had $65 worth of fun opening it.
  • I opened 12 boxes from a sealed case last year. Horrible collation. Sometimes I would get 11 of the same player in a box. Got 4 Griffey's in a box 2 different times. Got a box with zero Griffeys too.
