2 Thaler newp, with a twist

From the recent Frühwald auction:

Deutschland vor 1871 Brandenburg-Preussen

Friedrich Wilhelm III. 1840 - 61 Vereins-Doppeltaler 1840 A, Berlin, mit chin. Chopmarks, AKS 9, KM 425, win. Rf. ss/f.ss+

This is a pretty cool specimen, another coin I've never previously seen chopmarked. Unlike the 1 gulden in the other thread, I have no doubts about the Chinese origin of the chopmarks on this one. The drill marks give me more confidence they are legitimate.

I really wasn't sure I'd receive this coin. I placed a strong bid, but post auction results showed the coin was "unsold". It appears there was a mixup with the bidding for this and and a few other lots, but luckily things were sorted out. Dr. Frühwald ended up sending an invoice for the opening bid amount, which I really appreciate.

Not many chopmarked coins are found from around 1840, although it could have been chopmarked at some point later on. I really doubt there are many other examples with chopmarks out there. Condition wise, the surfaces are just OK, but the details are still pretty good all things considered. Almost all trade coins are pretty boring, almost never as ornate as this one. Another great addition to my chopmarked type set.
