Sunday, May 11, 1969

This was an interesting find. This note was in a bank strap of circulated $1s, and on the face of the note to the left of George Washington's portrait, someone appears to have typed "Sun. May,11, 1969".

The characters look typewritten to the naked eye, although under magnification, they almost look like they could have been made using an inkjet printer.

But an examination of the back of the note reveals distinct indentations behind the period and two commas, consistent with what you'd see on the back of a typewritten page.

BEP monthly production dates that far back are not known, but Series 1963B notes were delivered to the Federal Reserve between Jan 1969 and Nov 1969, according to uspapermoney.info. An examination of the face and back plate numbers from 1,103 notes in the series suggests that the GH block was probably the first block serialed in the series. My guess is that the typing is contemporary, i.e., that someone obtained this note when it was newly released into circulation, rolled the note into a typewriter on May 11, 1969 and typed the date for some reason.

I checked the calendar for 1969, and May 11 was indeed a Sunday. It happened to be Mother's Day, so perhaps there is a connection. Or not, it's anybody's guess. How cool would it be to find whomever typed the date and tell that person about finding a dollar bill that they typed on 47 years ago!
