Pop Reports for 2016 Gold Dimes... any idea of % grading 70 out of a box of 10?

For those who would like to see the rate of 69 vs 70.
TIA

Nearly Impossible (if not impossible) to know rate of 69 vs. 70 by looking at the raw numbers.

As of today's published statistics, 249 coins have been graded by PCGS -- with 46 graded SP69, and 203 graded SP70.

Cardinal... The pop report does not include the coins that were min graded 70 and failed to make the grade. Wondercoin.

That is true, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the minimum grade cutoff for raw coins only apply to bulk submissions of over 100 pieces? If that is the case, are you saying multiple wholesalers roped in enough individual buyers to exceed the 100-coin threshold for these, and got all of those submitted within 10 days of the release?

I can't speak for others, but I can tell you that I had at least 200 Submitted well before the 10th day. And, I didn't even need to "rope" anyone. Lol.

And, again, ANYONE can min. Grade 70 as far as I know... Dealer, collector, investor... You name it. You pay the fee for the coins that fail to grade at your min. Grade. And, since those failed coins never hit the pop report (as they are never slabbed), you are only looking at 69s in the report that were min. Graded at 69 or submitted with no min. Grade. Hope this helps.

Thank you for clarifying that for me. I just checked the PCGS Submission instructions, and found that a minimum grade may be requested for any raw coin dated 1965 or later. (I guess the overwhelming proportion of my coin submissions have been coins that were a bit older than that. image )
  • How many of your 200 went 70? That would be a good sample.

Gotta be a 50% rate on 70s based on anecdotal reports. The satin finish seems to help - a lot.

It would be a great sample. And, when I get most of them back, I should have a great idea of the "true" grade through rate. Send me a note Jim in about 7-10 days and I would be happy to share whatever information I have with you.

PCGS CoinFacts shows #597222 Mercury dime golds graded with 786- 70's, 118- 69's, and 1-68 as being graded. It seems to be more up-to-date than the pop report.

Edited to state there are 109- 70's graded with the David Hall label, that so far everyone who submitted who knows how many coins, stated a minimum grade of 70, as there are no 69-s.

Where did this pop description come from -

"Type 2, Clad 2016-W 10C Mercury Dime Gold 100th Anniversary First Strike"

It's a "Mercury Dime 2016 Centennial Gold Coin" According to the USmint

I haven't seen it mentioned around here, but these coins weigh so little, it appears that the mint presses didn't handle them properly, thus the so-called finning. That may keep most of them free from some of the dings heavier coins get, yielding many 70's.

If the true rate of 70's (now 85%) prevails, the premium one would expect for them diminishes, and at the same time, 69's head towards bullion, plus a little extra. So what's next?

It's still early, but what happens between now and the May 19th cutoff date could motivate me to add $180 for ten First Strike labels. Maybe. Right now, no. And if there are "too many" 70's, the reason to submit them later will depend on market pricing.

Could leaving them alone be better than submitting them?

Yes, but don't mess up the nice fins that the Mint so thoughtfully added. image
