1977 Topps Reggie Jackson Orioles Unissued Proof

Jackson $50k

I am going through the results of the REA auction and came across this. OMG 50k.

To anyone who knows the back story on this card is this price expected or shocking?

Maybe a little surprising as to total, but it is an iconic card, listed in the SCD Standard Catalog and given some notoriety in SCD articles by Olberman and Lemke in the past.

Thanks for the response with that info.

Any idea how many actually exist?

Based on what has come out so far, only a handful. SCD lists about a dozen blank back 77 cards, including the Jackson , that picture the player in a different pose or uniform than that in the regular issued set. In at least 3 cases the player on the proof card is not even in the regular set at all. All these cards are highly sought after by proof collectors or in some cases player collectors. Probably all of them are hand cut. Some uncut sheets with several of the subjects, including the Jackson, have sold previously.

Hiya Kirk - I want to say that this card might have been a fantasy piece?

    Here's a link I found Kirk: LINK

I recollect that one of our board members owns one of these?

This was a card in the few thousand range back about 10 years ago?

A few years back, Toppsvault auctioned off this proof sheet at the National:

Very rare desirable card. 50 is a little surprising, but not that surprising. I love the description where it says this card is hand cut (and pretty badly I must say) but otherwise near mint. It's like saying that card is mint, except for the giant crease running through the middle of it. Funny.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

I really like that Baylor, too. Sorry Topps didn't go with it (as well as the Jackson.)
