I know someone has researched this.
I kinda remember something about it, but still wonder what purpose they serve.
And especially NOW when the coins are just slugs.

Regarding NOW, it seems that since the classic commems, mint marks have been used to drive collector demand when they are added and diminish demand when they are not provided. It's an interesting turn of events.
