Interesting Toning and the 30+ Year Old Holder that caused it.

Not great toning, just interesting...

I was at a coin show last Thursday and this was one of the cheaper items that I picked up

for entertainment value. Under the poor lighting at the show and the flip itself it was difficult

to know what the coin would really look like once I got it home, out of the flip and

photographed. It is an interesting blue-green color with a bit of gray mixed in. The coin is in

a plastic flip but the flip is stapled to the blue card. The card is only blue on one side and white

on the other. The dealer has been in business for well over 40 years and has a ton of material

in really old flips/holders. I actually bought 3 coins from him, one of which was pretty darn

cool but that is the subject for another thread on another day.

It might be better if the reverse were dipped... image

    It's pretty in any case.

When I put the coin/holder under my halogen lights for about 30 seconds, the center of the blue card changed a bit...

it reacted to the heat almost in a melting way.

Yup, could be that too but I would be more inclined to think the paper did it.

No way to really know for sure.

    Real interesting coin.

62 is a year in the flat mint packs the coins often tone in blues and other colors. There has been some talk about why they tone in blues no one really seems to know though.

The holder the coin was in all those years really helped create a unusual tone I wonder though if something in the mint process helped the coin towards its blue destiny as well.

    great coin , nice image.

That's a PVC flip, right? I would give it an acetone bath. Might clear up some of the haze.

Based on the age of the flip, I would imagine so but cannot say for sure. I was thinking about

using MS70 on the reverse and then maybe acetone to neutralize anything else. I do not see

any PVC damage on the coin thankfully...although, I would not consider myself the highest of

experts on PVC and the damage that relates to it.

I would suggest you start with acetone because it is safest. It won't harm natural toning. And if there's some light PVC haze it will clear it up. Then you can choose to play with other conservation techniques. Or not.

Have you ever sat around a campfire with a cold beverage and look up at the sky and see all those stars? That's what the obverse looks like to me.

Looks like galactic toning, very Star Wars-esque.
