What is the best hockey box to buy?

I have noticed that there are lots of Hockey wax boxes in OPC and Topps to buy from late 70s to early 80s. Is there one or two that have a better potential? As an example Steve has 80-81 topps boxes at a special price and it is old and condition sensitive and may make a good grading potential but 1985 has Mario RC which is a great card but there seems to be not much more. 1978 OPC has lots of nice cards too. If you put a cap at 2500.00 but did not necessarly have to spend it all, what would be your best box? Thaks for your imput!

Your plan is to open - submit to PSA - make profit?

If you happen to like the 1980-81 Topps boxes and also are looking to spend up to 2,500, I'd suggest going with one box of 1980 Topps plus one box of 2005 The Cup. If you're looking to open the packs to look for cards to grade and sell, you might do better with two of the 2005 The Cup, or, one box of 2005 Cup and one box of 2007 Cup. Vintage hockey are a ton of fun but it is tough to make the 1980 Topps box pay off.

To explain better, My plan is too keep the box unopened but at the same time, have a box that appreciates better in the future based on stars in the set and condition sensitive. As an example, 1972 topps hockey is very easy to get in psa 9 and 10s. A1979 topps baseball box has stars plus it is hard to get centered cards so it commands a premium. I hope I explained better.

If you are keeping the box sealed, I'd recommend spending money on OPC instead of Topps if you can find an affordable price range. More centering issues make them tougher rips than Topps, but compared with Topps the OPC sets have more collectors, and more stars in the checklist.

The only boxes from 1979-1989, in your price range, I see with potential are 1985 Topps and 1986-87 Topps/OPC. Personally, I'd get the 1986-87 OPC as I think it has the best investment potential under $2500. Best of luck.

I'd surely go with OPC over Topps. I like the 84-85 RC class as well as the 80-81 OPC RC class. Good luck with whatever you decide.
52-90 All Sports, Mostly Topps, Mostly HOF, and some assorted wax.

I would stay away from all 80's hockey, except for high grade HOF RCs. If you insist on wax, I would buy sealed cases of 1989-90 OPC or Topps. Sleeper pick - mid-80's OPC Sticker boxes.
Kiss me once, shame on you.
    Kiss me twice.....let's party.

    Probably a good idea.

    But I don't see 1989 Topps/OPC Hockey EVER being a good investment.
