1955 Koufax Rookie PSA-8.5...

Anyone else floored by the closing price in the PWCC...$65,100! Isn't that price higher than the last PSA-9 Koufax Rookie...which sold...by ~$20,000?

At one time...I was looking to buy that card in an 8.5. Now...not only is an 8.5 over my head but also an 8 is out of my league. I recently settled for a nice PSA-7.

  • There were some amazing prices last night but this one raises eyebrows. I think someone is betting on an upgrade. Thats a heck of a bet.

I know cards are going up in value, but this card a year ago was a $3500 card in an 8. Now it is a $10-12k card in an 8. Not sure why the sudden rise in value to meteoric levels.

agreed that is one ugly magic bird psa 10. Haven't seen one up for auction in forever though. still probably a 50K card.

still pains me thinking back when I was holding a perfect 10 in my hands at the Baltimore national a few years ago. perfectly centered all around, even perfectly centered perforations. Dealer wanted 10K for it which was out of my league at the time. but it was a monster card that would go for insane money in the right auction one.

I would call a tilt...a distraction to the viewer or not aesthetically pleasing to the eyes.

Koufax rookies were due to take off in my opinion. I'm not at all surprised- I know I've discussed it with some guys.
Dan- your bird/Johnson 9 is better than that 10!!!

I agree Jeff. It seems like there have been cycles for certain iconic cards to take off. First it was Clemente RC's, then Aaron RC's, then the 51B Mantle, now Koufax. I think the next one to look out for might be the Ernie Banks RC which is relatively low in comparison to some of the others mentioned.

Agree with Banks; Kaline is another but how about the 34 Goudey Greenberg RC?? In my opinion this is an EXTREMELY undervalued card of a HOFer in psa 8; there are only 26 8's, three 9's and one 10; back in 2007 when I bought mine there were only 23 8's so it was a very low pop card in an 8 nine years ago and still is today; only three more examples in an 8 today than there were almost 10 years ago. Compare the pops in 8, 9 and 10 to the koufax, clemente and aaron rookies: this card in an 8--when it does sell--should sell for alot more than it does based on what those comparable cards with significantly higher pops sell for; I guess since there's not hundreds of 8's floating around like there are for the other three cards is one reason why one doesn't sell in an auction or on ebay every week like the koufax and clemente; it seems like every major auction has a clemente 8 and koufax seems to be heading in that direction of late. And maybe another reason its undervalued is because it's prewar and goudey and not necessarily a mainstream set like 54 or 55 topps, who knows.

Here are the pops in 8, 9 and 10 for koufax, clemente and aaron RC's:

    55 koufax 225, 23, 3

    55 clemente 121, 11, 1

    54 aaron 182, 22, 2

As I said, compare those pops to the greenberg at 26, 3 and 1; I wonder what the pops of the koufax, clemente and aaron RC'S in an 8 were in 2007 and how many more examples have been graded 8 since then.

ETA: Also just realized that the print runs of the topps cards in the 50's were probably significantly higher than they were for goudey cards in the 30's which also could explain the lopsided #'s.

Clockwork...I hope your right about the Banks RC. I have a PSA-8 in my collection.

Also...the Ryan RC has made its jump or maybe it's not done running.

Here is a question for the board. Does the meteoric price rise in the rookie card of a player eventually lift all boats...meaning do all the cards of an iconic player realize a corresponding significant rise in price...percentage wise that is? If so...I might be able to move up my retirement. ; ) Actually...I am into collecting for the right reason...as a hobby.

Banks I would agree.....I don't know about Kaline or Greenberg. They are just not as popular as guys like Banks, Aaron, Clemente.......

Also, I don't think the rise in rookie card prices means a huge jump in the following year cards for that player. Clemente cards from 56-73 didn't seem to get a huge lift from that 1955 rookie. Aaron cards after 1954 didn't see a huge jump either....

i have a few banks which i posted and was perusing them aggressively.stopped because the quality was becoming harder to find. posted about a yr ago that they were cheap. The prices are starting to increase but haven't reached their peak..yet....but yes , banks is on deck. imho...who's in the hole? Plus i love the aesthetics of the card. and the guy as a person.
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all. image

The '51 Bowman Mays rookie still has room to go up imho.
  • mb2005mb2005 Posts: 165 ✭✭
I would say one that has room to go up is the 1948 Bowman Stan Musial, even though it will always take a back seat to the 1948 Leaf...

  • ClockworkAngelClockworkAngel Posts: 1,994 ✭✭✭
I agree on the Musial. Very underrated. (However, I disagree on the set as I strongly prefer the Bowman over the Leaf set, but that's me)

I have a hard time believing that Koufax sale was legitimate based on the bidding.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I was talking about the 1948 Musial Bowman taking a back to the the 1948 Leaf in terms of price. The choice between the 2 as far as looks is up for debate.....but I prefer the Leaf.
