Need some input or opinions from Morgan Dollar collectors.

I am looking at getting a Morgan Dollar for my variety type set and this variety is one I am currently considering. I like the 1880-O scarface also, but it is much more pricey.

The 79-O Vam - 4 is a Top 100, but I am just wondering how it is regarded by Morgan collectors and what they go for in various grades.

Thanks for any input.

I think you meant the 1888-O scarface...

the 1879-O is a hard to find dollar in MS and pricey too.

But, you might just consider a nice CC dollar for a type set. There are so few collectors that include all the mintmarks in the type set...but it's a shame that they overlook Carson. How about a nice high end tailbar for a cool variety?

I owned one that was graded 64 by ANACS- I am trying to remember if it was crossed into a PCGS 64 holder by Heritage before it was sold- that was probably 10 years ago.

This is a rare coin- few exist in UNC.

Are you looking for an MS Morgan variety? If not, I would consider the 1888-o Hot lips or the 1901 shifted eagle. Of the two, I would go with the 1901 shifted eagle

Sorry about the error on year on the scarface. I'm not familiar with the 1901 shifted eagle. I saw a 79-O Vam-4 for under $100 in PCGS55 and wondered if that was a good or bad deal.

The 1901 DDR "shifted Eagle" is the most dramatic DDR of the Morgan series. Original high end circ examples will cost you, but I do not see them as expensive in view of the what the coin represents.

The 1879-o vam 4 in 55 at $100 really depends on the look. I don't think that is unreasonable if the coin has the right look.

One other thing that should help- go to the Vamworld website and they have notes about the Vam 4 with auction prices- that might help with your decision- good luck

If you want a Morgan Dollar variety for your type set, go with a variety that has a naked eye feature which doesn't carry a huge premium. Think clashed E reverse , such as the Hot 50 1884-P VAM 2A, Top 100 1886-O Vam 1A or Top 100 1891-O VAM 1A. The 1884 VAM 2A is probably the best choice for getting the most bang for your buck. The latter two are going to be priced substantially higher in BU than the 1884.
