New Member Checking In & Showing Off Some Recent Pick Ups: 1954 WS Tickets and 1992 Team USA Basketb

Hi everyone, long time lurker here, finally joined up to contribute and share with other like minded collectors.

I generally collect cards from all sports from my childhood era, 1979-1989. But I also dabble in vintage and modern whenever I find something in great condition and/or the card/auto catches my eye.

I guess for my first post I will share two items. I normally collect cards, but on other occasions I come across other cool stuff.

First is a full set of 1954 world series tickets (uncut, as a sheet). Remember, game one was Willie Mays famous catch. PSA won't accept these for grading as a uncut item. Would SGC grade them uncut? Some local hobbiests have suggested chopping up and submitting as singles for grading; others said keep raw, seal up well, and display. I am interested on the opinions from you guys have on that subject. Also, what is the likely value on something like this raw vs graded? I am not a ticket aficionado, but these are a nice piece of history!

The second item is a USA 1992 basketball team signed hat. No coaches; just the players. All autos were obtained in person at the practice facility in Oregon before the Olympic Games. What do you guys think it is worth? I sent into PSA for authentication earlier this week. Excited for it to come back soon.

Finally, a quick card shop/show question. I am moving to Southern Maryland soon. I will be traveling often to DC for work. I am curious to know if board members have recommendations for visiting NOVA, DC, and MD card shops and shows? I am in the Midwest and do not know the area well. At least I will be close to the National in the future, right? Never been to one!

Welcome and thanks for sharing. Nice hat with some or all awesome autos. You preserved the hat very well.

I can see both sides to keeping the tix sheet uncut or having near mint to mint graded tickets. Is the value significant for 4 near perfect tix? If I were selling I may cut but if keeping and displaying then def framing them uncut. Just IMO.

One of the best things the dream team did was tour the country. Awesome time.
Interested in higher grade vintage cards. Aren't we all. image
  • would it be worth trying to get Mays to auto ticket #1? Might be cool. Not sure what he signs and charges these days...

The diagram I don't think is correct. Chris Mullin is where it says Laettner. That's definitely not Stockton where the diagram says. David Robinson is where the diagram is saying it's Bird.

If you give a picture straight on so I can see the front of the cap, I can probably tell you where others are.

I'm interested to see what PSA determines - my opinion, for the free charge it's worth, is they are not going to cert this but hopefully I end up being wrong.
  • Those tickets in the original block are very rare together as a whole ,,,,on the other hand to grade them they have to be separated, you said cut them no. No No don't do that tickets cut up are hand cut altered authentic, in that era tickets were separated by hand and if you want to get a high grade they must be fully original to the period and separated by hand. If you are keeping them for yourself do not separate if your looking to sell ,,for sure separate by hand only, very carefully , maybe even find someone who can show you how , and yes if you can hand separate them without damage then grade them. If you would've cut these up with any type of a tool you'd be very mad at yourself when it comes to grading .
  • IMF: TY. No cutting! I should have used the term "separating" into singles. : ]
