This seller does all of his listings like that. He/she list for an outrageous price for about a day then knocks 75% off so it is just a high price. They have different eBay seller names for each sport.
Has anyone notified Rick that the pack is no good?

hello Rick--hope that you are well. Wanted to let you know that this 1964 Topps BB cello pack is not legit. Topps only produced '64 cello packs in the red wrappers with the coins. There is a thread on the CU Boards if you want to verify.
out of curiosity , what is the basis that all 64's were red? I am not saying they aren't but I don't have any evidence. I have seen some clear 64's being sold by reputable sources in the past. For example , if topps produced rack packs in 64, that would have been the source of clear cellos. I believe I have seen the sales sheets for 64 racks however I have not seen a 64 rack.
This is similar to philadelphia football, blue cellos and racks with 3 clear cellos are well documented.
I must be off Kenny's mailing list. What am I going to do without all those time machine pictures? How will I remember to ponder if we can send a man to the moon why can't I get a box of '52 Topps packs?
Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Anthony, you are bad!!!!!
Not to worry though--for every email he doesn't send you he sends me 10 of them
In all seriousness (email bombardment notwithstanding), Ken's a great guy--if it wasn't for him I wouldn't have stole that 8 card 59 fleer box on ebay a month ago!!
Yeah Anthony ... I know what you mean. When I get my next email from Kenny (probably tomorrow ... lol) I will be sure to tell him to put you back on the list.
Anyone get the email yesterday with the graded $10,000.00 bill?

Yes it was Ken Meyer who sent me the link to the auction. Duncan here is why I think it is not legit--
I have been collecting unopened for almost 30 years and have not seen a legit '64 cello w/o the red. And there are not too many that get offered for sale. Notwithstanding my personal thoughts I also offer these facts--certainly not scientific--but backed with pictures --
pics are always welcomed !!
1. jersey five (Larry) had one of the greatest unopened collections ever. Guys who have been around know who I am referring to. He sold his entire collection of amazing unopened in 2007 thru Mile High. I am attaching pictures of the 2 packs that jerseyfive consigned and yup--both are red wrapper. Knowing Larry if there was a different version--he would have owned 1 or 2 packs.
2. Remember Mr. Mint's Michigan Million $$ Unopened find? Sold in conjunction with EAC Gallery in 2005 the auction was an unopened collector's dream. 1 or 2 packs of EVERY pack every offered by Topps--IIRC. All 4 sports and Non-Sports too. A truly amazing collection that at the time was all GAI graded. Only 1 '64 cello offered and yup--red wrapper. I do not know the person who owned the collection--but am assuming that if there was a different variety of '64 cello--this guy would have had it. He had EVERY other pack ever manufactured by Topps--4 major sports and all non-sport packs
3. As mentioned check out Murphy's Unopened book. -see the pictures offered and the 1 line mention in the writing.
4. Past eBay auctions. Show only 3 sales--all red wrapper. In fact a wrapper was recently sold--also red.

Thanks Manny, all well known information. I still don't believe in hard rules when in comes to Topps products but the odds are against this pack. I believe one of the packs that I saw in the past was a pack with Banks showing and I am pretty sure it was either Steve or Murphy selling it. topps did make clear cellos for their non-sport cellos in 64 so anything is possible.
If I recall you had a 57 cello folded across the back that you got from Murphy that you were told there was no way it was good. Same kind of cello that Hal Steinbrenner had the box from Murphy that yielded several mantles. I have also witnessed a 57 cello that yielded an aaron and williams that was folded across the back that we all said was no good. I bought a cello from pwcc a while back that Ken et all say was bad because it was folded across the back. I will open it at some point and we will have a better idea but the cello and the way it was sealed matches the pack that yielded the aaron and williams.
another example are 72 5th series cellos with print on the cello. One non-collector had a couple on eBay and one that the seal opened and I believe the rose graded a 9. I don't think many would have thought those were real before that.
all food for thought and I am in no way endorsing that 64 cello
Compliments of Mr Moran, this would go against any mass production of clear cellos as the triple cello rack shown in this ad sheet has red cellos. Never seen one of those either.
manny, isn't that a clear 64 cello in larry's sale to the right of the red cellos? Memories, I won the 64 Hubbs pack in your picture wish I still had it , one of the few items I regret selling
edited to add: I just checked my catalog, lot 196 , 1964 2nd series clear cello gai 8.5 ( much earlier generation gai holder than the one from probstein)

72 baseball cellos with graphics on the wrapper (as opposed to standard clear wrapped packs housed in outer blue cardboard box) were produced by Topps late in 1972 for high series packs. That is why the product code on back of the packs ends in a "2" as that last digit corresponds with the year the wrapper was designed and first used. Topps used that same wrapper throughout 1973 (and for the first part of 1974), before designing a different wrapper with a product code ending in "4," done primarily to accommodate the decreased card count in 1974 packs (from 27 in 1973 to 22 in 1974).
ETA: Re Mark Murphy's unopened guide and the page pictured above~Topps began producing cello packs in 1953, not 1952.

Pics are always welcomed eh?!?! Did you forget about the ones you told me you would send me a couple days after the RI show?!?!?! I've been waiting to welcome those for over two months!!
Your forgetfulness (likely due to old age) nonwithstanding lol, I'm surprised you didn't mention that in that 2007 mile high auction there was a non red ie clear 64 cello right on the same page with the two red ones; if you say the packs in that auction were all from Jerseyfive's collection, who consigned the non red one?? Or do you know with 100% certainty that it wasn't part of his collection and he therefore didn't consign it which is why you failed to mention it when it's right there on the same page??
I know the gentleman whose collection encompassed the 05 Mr mint auction. Met him at the national last year. Will email him and ask him if he knows of--or ever owned--any 64 cellos other than the red ones.

Thanks Tim, my point was regardless of the product code. Nobody would have believed them legit since they were non existent until 10 years ago and as far as I know, they are still non existent but I don't follow things as closely as I used too. One could argue that Topps designed the wrapper in 72 to be used Going forward but not necessarily for 72 when they decided to go that route with the football cellos.

There were a few of them up for auction recently in one of the auction houses and Josh (dragnet) crossed a couple of them to PSA. I would categorize them as a "test issue" for the 1973 release, similar to the way Topps produced "all series" packs at the tail end of 1973 in advance of the transition to the all series format in 1974. They are definitely tougher to find, but they are out there. The fact that the product code ends in "2" on these packs also supports that they were produced for distribution (albeit limited) in 1972. Had Topps started using wrappers with graphics in 1973, the product code would have ended in "3" like the boxes that the 1973 cellos came in.

For anyone interested, here is the list of years for cello wrappers through the 1970s with last digit of product code and card count in parentheses. Topps would redesign wrappers to coincide with either a price change and/or card count:
1972-2 (27) (for 1972, these were limited to high series packs, as all other 72 cellos were wrapped in clear cello and housed in a blue cardboard box with 30 cards in the pack)
1974-4 (22) (Topps did use leftover wrappers with product code ending in 2 in early 1974 before switching over to the new wrappers with product code ending in 4)
1975-5 (18) (Topps again used leftover 1974 wrappers in early part of 1975 before switching over to the new 1975 wrappers in the middle of 1975. Topps used same wrappers ending in product code 5 throughout 1977, as both card count of 18 and price of 25c remained constant throughout those years)
1978-8 (22)
1980-0 (25)

Hahaha. Yup, another one from Ken ... "They can send a man to the moon ... Why can't they invent a time machine so I can go back and buy a case of '52 wax."
