1954 Topps Aaron Authenticity/Grade Opinions

Happened upon this card yesterday at a local shop and was thinking about making an offer. Having very little knowledge of this one, I wanted to see if anyone here could vouch for its authenticity. I know the pictures aren't great, but best I could do given the owner wasn't around to take it out for me.

Assuming it is authentic, I am thinking PSA 1.5, as there were no discernibly heavy creases. Any thoughts?

Well-loved 62 year old Henry. Your guess sounds about right, if not a 1.

1.5 sounds like a safe bet. Definitely better than a 1 (take a look through the images of past PSA 1's on VCP.....ugh).
  • If there are no creases, then I am going with a 2. If you place an offer, make it well under the price of a two. Dont pay the same price because if thats the case, then you might as well buy one that's already in a holder and the label is a guaranteed two.

    Let us know.

BTW - YOu think for a semi-expensive card, they would actually have in a better - clear free - holder. No wonder why so many card shops went out of business. They just fail to evolve.

Depending on how long it has been in the screw-down holder it might come back N5 - altered stock. I bought a raw Aaron RC off ebay once and it arrived in a screw-down holder. I submitted it to PSA and it came back N5. I did some research and found that the screw-downs sometimes cause the corners and borders to look shiny and PSA notices that and the card gets an N5.

If it were me I would want to remove it from the screwdown before a purchase. Reason being is to be sure the card is not stuck to either inner half of the screwdown. Some cards, depending on how long they have resided in the holder, have been known to stick on the inner part thus causing a "split" card. You also get a "feel" for the cardboard as well, outside of the holder. Good luck.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Went back to the shop today and had him take it out of the case. No issues with that, but did notice a nice little crease running down from the top center of the card image. In the end, decided to make the purchase, as he was kind enough to throw in a 68 Ryan as well for what I felt was a good price overall. Now that I have them in person, here are a few scans I took prior to packaging them up to send to PSA. Hoping for anything at or above a PSA 1.5 on the Aaron and a PSA 2 on the Ryan. Either way, very happy with how both present image.

Yes, I noticed the white vertical line from the upper center edge through the "N" of Henry to the "M" in the cap. Thought this might have been a print mark, but upon closer inspection with your new pixs it's obviously a light crease or surface "blister". Clearer pixs to me this time. Not a bad Ryan. Hope they both clear the grading process.

Without knowing what you paid for the cards it's impossible to say if it was a good purchase or not (not that you asked).

No, I was more concerned with authenticity, so happy they both got through and it seems the predictions here were pretty accurate. If you wanted to know, I paid $500 total for both.

I think you paid well for the two cards. Now that they are graded at those levels, they are worth more than what you paid more or less. Regardless of what they are worth though, they are two iconic cards that are now yours. That's all I would care about if they were mine!
  • Nice eye appeal in the Hank!
  • Nice. You just came out about $200 on top. You literally got that Ryan for free.

Thanks guys -- in terms of investment potential, do you think these 2 will see much of a rise in the next 5 to 10 years? For most high-end cards, I've noticed that those at lower grades typically don't move much, whereas its the high-grades that really skyrocket.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that PSA 7 is considered "investment grade" and I know I've had troubles moving low grade key cards. I would think that, especially on key cards, as high grades move up so will the lower ones.

Glad for you that they passed muster. I could live with those 2 cards for the price you paid. Enjoy your acquisitions.
