Just curious. Has anyone ever charted all the different feathers

JRoccoJRocco Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭✭
Arrow feathers that is. Just looking through some of my images (not professional by any means) and I am fascinated by the varieties on the arrow feathers struck on CBH. Has anyone every broken down the differences or been curious about them ?

This is the sort of thing that is really missing on modern issues. Every single one looks exactly the same, except for the date.

Some of those talons look doubled too.

Sounds like a project to pursue, JRocco. Keep us posted.

Are the dies actually different or does that look come from strike quality, die wear, or maybe from circulation?

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

Sounds like the basis for a good article somewhere.

The arrow feathers (flights?) on the 1819 (second from the bottom image) look terrible, crude, almost fake...might be just the wear/strike. There could be volumes written about the inconsistencies of early coinage.

In my corner of the world, fletching are on arrows, flight for darts. image

Never heard of anyone documenting the differences. Maybe could be linked with the Overton numbers.

    Interesting post. Some look primitive.

Glad I am not alone in seeing this.

I could see differences in the major reverse designs, say Type 1 vs Type 2, but even in the major Types there are apparent differences. Some may be striking issues, but looking closely there is more going on than that.

    Further work is needed image

    Thanks

Here is a nice example to see the fletching (Thanks Sparky).

The 1832 O-120 No Tail Feathers CBH allows good viewing.

And just to be inclusive and because I love this coin in it's old NGC 58 fattie holder image here is the 1831 O-113 Broken Arrows variety....with my usual poor pics.
