Uncentered broadstrike with partial collar. Cool!

    Tilted Partial Collar.

In practice, with that much reeding,

it can't be called a Broadstrike, although

from viewing just the obv. & rev. photos,

    it looks B/S.

The unstuck planchet was laying at an

angle in the collar, and when the dies

came together, only part of the planchet

received the reeding from the collar.

With that much reeding, even with the

plain edge areas, it's more accurate to

call it a Tilted Partial Collar strike, imo.

    .

one of the closest ive seen to being a b/s for a morgan.

    sooooooo close. image

a nice error in any event!

so does m.a.d. & partially/fully? tilted collar go hand-in-hand here?

and is a fully tilted collar simply a b/s, uncentered or not?

Hard to place an additional value on something unless the buyer is willing to shell out for it.

Yes. While the VAM 7 is one of the few interesting 1921-S VAMs, there is not really a premium for it. As an error, for a Morgan Dollar, it is very dramatic. Even a fully centered partial collar is worth a good premium. I sold one last year (fully centered tilted partial collar with reeds all around) for something like $250-300, I think, although it was a 78 8TF in AU, not a 21-S. The OP coin does look like it has been cleaned, but the error probably renders that less important.

Wouldn't it be worth the money to grade it for a price guide and then look for this year and mint-mark to see what their selling for, if any ?

The unique nature of errors make a grade not as important. It also makes it hard to establish or use a price guide. I would estimate this coin at a couple hundred bucks, and will defer to FredW for a more precise valuation.

    Good Mornin' -

In the past few years, circ. Partial Collar Morgans have been going for

about $135-$175 or so, with MS pieces bringing $275-$350, depending

    on the Mint, grade etc.

I feel that for a nice mechanical error like this, even though the RailRoad

Rim is on the edge of the coin, these are a bit underpriced for their scarcity,

and nice size as a silver coin.

Mint State Partial Collars, especially from the New Orleans Mint, look pretty

    nice for the error.

Not attempting to derail this thread but happened upon a 1883P VAM 7A among family's stash of old silver. Wondering if anyone might know its value.
