Slow grading day at PCGS

BodinBodin Posts: 1,022 ✭✭✭
It is so hard not to keep checking and rechecking to see if my grades are in.
The last few shared orders are before and after my "received" date. So, anytime now.
HOWEVER, only 1 shared order was shipped today. sigh.

BTW PCGS says they have over 32mil coins graded.
Rough math states that is an average of 2,800 coins graded per day(if starting in 1985).
Can you imagine working in shipping?!?? OY!

It's fun when you get closer and closer and you are checking 10-20 times a day or MORE.......and then all of a sudden they pop up!

Yes, yes you CAN do it. How many "business days" has it been?

I started using a credit card to pay for submission fees. The CC has an "auto notify" feature on it that sends me an email any time the CC is used without being physically present. The instant I get that email, I know grades are available. PCGS charges the card at about the same time that grades are made available.

The grading process for me is the least enjoyable part of numismatics, because you pay a lot of money for a service that takes way too long to provide. $78.95 for one coin (plus shipping to send to PCGS) is a lot of money for your coin to be gone 4-6 weeks.

    It is what it is...

$79.00 for 4-6 week service? It sure is what it is and they get away with it! That's because PCGS coins bring the best prices so they got us.

When I need something done fast (1-2 weeks) at a much lower cost I use a different TPGS that shall go unnamed as I don't wish to slow down my orders with them...LOL.

I get my questionable coins screened for "details" or counterfeits and the coins that come out really good from them get cracked & crossed (at my option as they sell well as is) most of the time at the same grade. Conservation there is free when I ask for it. I'm not a rich man, but I will be at this rate.

I'm only three days into my most recent submission and I have already checked twice a day... LOL

If it were a single grader....YIKES!

But we know that PCGS has a lot of graders ans at 10 seconds per coin, they can produce quite a bit in a very short period of time.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

I suspect grading is the fastest part of the whole process.

I can't imagine slabbing the coins. What if you damage it?!?

I bet post grading activity is what takes the most amount of time.

    Just a hunch....

It is. Think of all that goes into the process. Let's take a typical 10 coin submission and go for speed. This process slows down as day goes by or if problems.

START: package opened, coins checked with invoice, input info :each coin and customer stuff, print labels and apply to each coin and one for box. STOP: 5 minutes unless there is a problem.

Grader gets box START: remove coins , grade, replace in flips STOP: 2.5 minutes unless there is a problem.

Assembly Room: START: print labels, remove coins, place in insert, blow out plastic halves, assemble slab, sonic seal each, place in box for shipping STOP: 13 minutes

Quality Control: START: Check everything is there and correct STOP: 1 minute

Shipping START: Check order w/coins, box and wrap package STOP: 3 minutes

So approx. 25 minutes and lots of hands.

I'll bet in a competition using a 1 coin walk through, all the above could be done in under 4 minutes!

Submission for one coin @ $78.95 (+ shipping) requires explanation of circumstance of submission by poster. That's a lot - o - bucks. MHO

I have been submitting coins for 30 years and I have never gotten over the excitement of checking for the grades.....20, 30 maybe 40 times a day. The refresh button has become my friend! image
