Here is one of my favorite toned Peace Dollars

I haven't shown any of this set in a very long time. I spent 4 years trying hard, and another 7 or so trying casually, to build a date set of Peace Dollars with nice looking toning. It was fund, but wasn't exactly easy. Toned Peace Dollars are usually ugly, and even the ones that are nice are sometimes accused of being ugly.
The idea of building the set was to compile a set that simultaneously wasn't ridiculously expensive, but that also wasn't easy to duplicate. When you find a toned, common date, UNC Peace - it might cost (or at least used to cost - I haven't purchased one in some years) multiples of what a normal one might cost, but they still aren't really 'expensive.' It might take a year to find one, but when you do, it is usually within the financial reach of most collectors.
I was never able to actually complete the set. I still haven't found a nice enough toned 34, so that 'hole' is still blank. My 28-P is nice, and has SOME toning, but it falls short of the others. My 21 is the same story, but I let it slide because it's strike was considerably better than average.
Anyway, this is the one I usually consider my favorite. I'll post some of the others another time.
Thanks for looking

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Fan of toned coins but not toned Peace dollars. They almost never look right to me. This is very nice
Agree.

Thank you. Many people don't like toned Peace Dollars - they are usually ugly. (The dollars, not the people) Even the nice ones can't compete with the stunning color on their some of their older Morgan dollar cousins. It is a fun compliment when someone who doesn't normally like them still says something positive.
I think what helps this one look good is that the color doesn't obscure Liberty's face. Peace toning can is usually be dark, red/brown/black, splotchy and crunchy. On this color stays soft and almost lets Liberty look backlit.
It is exceedingly rare to see a sliver of actual 'rainbow' on a Peace Dollar as well, so the little crescent around the rim was a welcome bonus.
I really like the look of the reverse.
Mike
Peace dollars are a special case. When people consider how they're "supposed" to look, they are always influenced by how Morgans are "supposed" to look. Morgans and Seated dollars are just as close chronologically, yet everyone views them as completely separate entities. For reasons that we can debate for ages, some Morgans developed very nice and very particular toning patterns. The same is not true of most series, and certainly not of Peace dollars. As a result, it seems that blast white is the preferred look, even by people who appreciate originality in other coins.
My own opinion is that huge numbers of really nice Peace dollars are seeing the dip bucket before hitting the market. As my interest in this unique series has matured, some things strike me as curious. The top pop coins are only occasionally white. This may just be that the graders prefer a little color, but I think it's more than that. A few of the best coins with the best luster and best surfaces have been spared the dip bucket. Originality is so very important in other "classic" series, but not yet widely appreciated in this one. I suspect that someday people will be hard pressed to find really top coins that have been unmolested, especially considering the powerful current "blast white" market forces.
It's such a pleasure to open a roll of BU common-date Peace dollars and see them all with even golden skin and deep luster, even if bagmarks abound. I also believe that a Peace dollar will a nice even patina will often re-tone in unpredictable, blotchy ways after a dip.
My own set was pretty much a collection of white coins a couple of years ago. Since then, a few with more original skin have crept in. I still like a nice white coin, with immaculate skin and good frost (just acquired a new phenomenal white coin), but I'm also growing more fond of those with an "old" look to them. It's difficult though, because no matter how original they are, many Peace toners just aren't that appealing.
Here is one I sold, that I should have kept. I like this look:
Not sure what it is about this series, I have heard that they are hard to capture an accurate image of.

I believe this nails it. Such a huge percentage of these have been bleached that it is accepted as normal. Coins with original surfaces stick out enough as to look strange.

BryceM's coin is super too. Like the Franklin or Washington toners that seem more likely to be available.

After seeing the coins here and thinking, hey I could use one in my collection, I went looking online for an example I thought I'd like. Somehow felt 58 was my best option for a tire kicker, and this one is on its way.
What is going on between R & T @ 130p on obverse & beak on reverse? Just wondering.
Nothing. Just the way the light is hitting that part of the coin.
Nice coins. Keep 'em coming.
+1 Some really great coins have been posted! I wish I had some to share.
Good to see you back, Eric!

Are you kidding me? Of course I do. You don't SELL a coin like that once you've got it in your hands
This AU58 1921 has a nice burgundy color but my lack of photographic skills makes it hard to see.
She has a mark on her lower cheek that I can't find for the life of me looking at the coin but it sure shows up in pictures.

Ouch!
Like I told you back then....no intention to sell, but you treasure it more than I would have, so it is definitely in the right place. Good to hear and good to see you back again.
