1934 Goudey Premiums Set + Bazookas
Absolutely gorgeous complete set of all four R309-1 Goudey Premiums with two original mailing envelopes: The set includes Babe Ruth, 1933 American League All Stars with Ruth and Gehrig, 1933 National League All Stars, and 1933 “World Champions” New York Giants. This set looks almost exactly as it did when it was received by its original owner (who, as seen on the special custom-made Goudey envelopes that accompany, was young Robert Harrison of Detroit, Michigan). R309-1 Goudey premiums were available only by mail in exchange for Goudey Gum wrappers. When Robert Harrison received these premiums in the mail back in 1934, he was probably overwhelmed by the quality of production. These very substantial high-quality premiums, probably the most expensive cards ever produced by Goudey, are printed on thick cardboard stock. R309-1 are designed with a fold-out cardboard easel attachment on the reverse, which allows each card to stand on its own for display. All four examples have the easel backs intact and complete. All look so brilliantly fresh and clean it appears that Robert Harrison just glanced at them before putting them away in their envelopes for safekeeping. But close inspection reveals that before he did this, he did take the time to write "R. Harrison, Nov. 20, 1933" neatly in light pencil in the upper right hand corner of the reverse of one of the four (the 1933 "World Champions" New York Giants premium). Other flaws are equally minor in our opinion. The 1933 American League All Stars with Ruth and Gehrig has a virtually undetectable tiny surface crease in the upper left and a vertical crease that is almost impossible to see from the front but is visible from the reverse. (Despite the instructions "Please - Do Not Bend or Crush Photographic Print" boldly printed on the mailing envelope, this may very well have happened in mailing.) The card still has a virtually perfect overall appearance. The Babe Ruth premium is a gem but has a very light surface crease in the lower left visible only upon the closest inspection, a hint of corner wear, and it appears to have had two strips of tape residue along the left and right edge of the reverse (we have seen this before on R309-1 Ruths and are uncertain what is responsible). The 1933 National League All Stars is in essentially flawless Near Mint condition, but frankly, unless really looking for flaws that have no impact on overall appearance, it really looks to be in the same condition as all the others. Pretty much exactly like they looked in 1934. So there you really have it: These cards are tough to grade. A simple grade of "this one is Vg-Ex, that one is Vg, etc." cannot possibly do justice to these gems. They're not perfect but this is one of the freshest, most impressive R309-1 sets we've ever seen! And no wonder. They've been stored away in their original mailing envelopes since 1933! In summary, several have very tiny flaws as noted, but this is an incredible set with an overall Excellent to Near Mint appearance. Asking $6,500.00 OBO. You will not find a more attractive set. The bazookas in the slideshow are available for purchase as well and are in MINT to GEM condition. Email ekekela08@aol.com. Check or MO only.
SIGNED card collection 979 stars, HOFers tough signers etc. This is the famous collection that I sold many toughies to Olbermann and other auto collectors. These come from my personal stash of "keepers" to send to PSA. Over 95% of this collection is 8-10 quality signatures and 90+% of these were signed in person during the playing days! I am going to throw out a line and see if there is any serious auto collectors who would make me an offer on the entire lot of 979 cards. Value is well over $35K and would be much more in PSA DNA holders! Thanks for looking!
