Steph Curry rookie

Is this a good time to pick up Curry rookies? I am afraid it will be more expensive when GSW wins another championship and him another MVP

Comments

  • Yes, always a good time to buy any RC
Big Fan of: HOF Post War RC, Graded RCs
WTB: PSA 1 - PSA 3 Centered, High Eye Appeal 1950's Mantle
  • someone asked this question about MJ in 2011....7k looks like a bargain now. As with any RC, buy high grade; do not overpay for junk. IMO, lots of NM condition stuff on ebay right now being passed as "pack fresh mint" or "future 10?" GL with the search! AND SHOW US SOME PICS WHEN YOU GET THE GOODS!!!! : ]

Depends on how proficient a swimmer you are. The Topps ship is in the middle of the ocean. Half a year ago you could pick up a gem base for $60; there are a couple riding the current PWCC wave @ $1,725 & $1,625.

Not a certainty by any stretch. SAS is gonna have a say in this matter, believe you me.

Yeah, always buy right when cards are at their highest.
  • Prices are reflecting him being MVP and champ but think the cards will cool.
  • Geez, I was throwing psychotic bids at some of these Curry card auctions and still getting slaughtered. Time to move on and get back on my regular bandwagon.
  • Hi Guys, looking for some of your wisdom. I noticed that the Curry topps #321 are going crazy now. I picked one up years ago and am trying to figure out if I should keep it, sell it or get it graded and keep it or sell it? It has been in a magnetic holder in my long box for a couple of years. I have never had a card graded or even sold a card. Thank you guys very much. Am looking forward to your responses.

I say sell raw. I've been reading that many more if these are getting graded so if they hit eBay, I would have to think prices would decrease some

Personally I would think of this like buying a stock. If shares in a company ran from $6 to $175 in a very brief period, the odds of a significant correction are almost 100%. It doesn't mean it can't go higher first and perhaps much higher longer term, but when something has a price expansion of that magnitude it will attract sellers. I would either wait for a retracement of some kind or perhaps a seller that lists one looking for a quick sale rather then get caught up in the frenzy. If by some chance they never see lower prices you just have to chalk it up to you missed that one. Obviously it is probably safe to say that he is no Jeremy Lin but his cards did the same thing and began to collapse prior to his on court performance. When someone coughed up 21k for one of his rookies a PSA 7 1952 Mantle was a 35k card so I would also look around and see what else could be purchased with similar dollars and ask myself what I thought was a better buy. That said if you must pull the trigger be prepared to purchase a handful of copies and dollar cost average your way into his cards.

  • Thank you guys very much for the replies. I appreciate all of them. I know it is desirable now but I can't see how a modern base Topps card is going this bonkers. Going to list it. Will use cash towards getting my first PSA membership. Also, I have never sold a card. Is it safe? Do people pay? I am just afraid some moron will buy it and switch it out for one that isn't as sharp as this one and complain and send me a dinged up one back. Or is that paranoia. Thanks again everybody

I just picked up my first one. I got a raw Upper Deck SP for $30 at a local show. I thought it was a pretty good deal.

Just curious, how much is the Steph Curry National Treasure Rookie with auto and game used jersey numbered to 99?

Dang--I sold a Topps Gold for around $130 in January and thought I did well! I paid 30 last summer but goodness, they're up over $400 now. He is on another planet right now.

I was going through some stuff this weekend and came across a large lot of 2009 UD jumbo packs, looks like they all came from Dave & Adam's as the free gift when ordering over $75. Must have been my favorite gift, think there were 18 packs total!!

I think it's crazy that people are paying this kind of money for Curry. I see a huge fall off especially if the Warriors don't win a title. I personally would rather own a King James card or spend my money on a Jordan rookie.

Oh boy. Jeremy Lin cards peaked when this happened. This will be interesting for sure.

  • Just wanted to stop by and thank you guys for your advice. I was able to turn the Curry Topps base into a few cards that I have always been too cheap to buy. Picked up a Lebron Chrome RC, Trout Chrome RC, Jimmie Johnson Au RC and Jeff Gordon 87 RC and was able to put $168 in the bank for future purchases. Don't want to get long winded just to stop by and thank the brain trust here for their help and guidance.

I am fascinated by the price of Curry Rc's. When he wins the MVP and if he wins a championship how much higher can they go?

The best way to determine future value might be to determine other players RC's and when they peaked. When did LeBron prices peak? When did Kobe peak? etc.

Jordan prices have gone crazy the last year.

I just think that the ENTIRE highend market went to another level this past year or so. Everything gotten so much more expensive, all the high grade PSA or modern limited patch auto rc, they have all rise to a whole new level ... for whatever reason!
  • Simple. Supply is low. Demand is off the charts. Try to remember when they introduced canned Cherry Coke.

Odds that this card will be $25 in less than 2 years?

None. Maybe $250. Now is the time to sell for sure, but I bet it holds at least $100 plus value in Mint grade and $250 plus Iin PSA 10. Card is ugly as hell though

LeBron was the best and most popular player on the planet for years and his Topps RC has rarely been over $50, even at his PEAK after back-to-back Championships. I don't see this Curry holding while others haven't. This, IMO, is more akin to Linsanity, granted with a better, more proven player.

It's an sp and Curry has captivated the youth of our country and others far more than LeBron ever did. I am not a Curry fan, but these are the facts

It's not short-printed. None of the rookies in that set are short-printed.

I mean come on. You could buy 35+ LeBron Topps RCs for the cost of one Curry right now. Probably 400 Tim Duncan Topps RCs. About 200 Kobe Topps RCs. 200 Kevin Durant Topps RCs. Etc...

Eventually someone with the potential to be better will come along and these cards will cool. Is there a player who hasn't had this happen at all besides maybe Jordan?
  • AlbertdiditAlbertdidit Posts: 560 ✭✭✭
It's not that the rookies in that set are short printed but it appears that not as many Topps cards from that year were printed as opposed to some other years past. I would imagine there are WAY more especially of Duncan and Kobe than there are of Curry

I agree the price will eventually drop but in no way do I think this card raw will ever be under 3 figures again (barring injury). The Linsanity drop off cant be compared to the Curry drop that will occur. He's going to continue to put up monster stats and the card will only go down so far. And it has tons of room to go down and still be a $100 card

I guess the comment this was in response to was deleted. Hopefully the person got paid. When bidders drove Lin's cards to the moon the party came to a screeching halt once the winning bidders went silent and onlookers who assumed the prices were real started listing their cards in droves. Clearly Curry has had a much greater impact on the game and one can assume for the time being he isn't going anywhere but when cards go parabolic generally someone is left holding the bag.

I have no idea on print runs, but I think the fact that prior to 09, Topps produced both Chrome and Base and you could buy boxes of either leads me to believe that there just aren't as many. In 09 the Chromes were inserts /999. Once the Chromes took off, the base were naturally to see a spike. I'm not suggesting the price is right, and a dip should be expected at some point, but the guy is playing off the charts and hadn't even played the 4th quarter of 18 games thus far.

Also, looking at PSA Pop Report to gauge supply might help add some perspective.

    2003 Topps #221 Lebron = 2100
    2003 Topps Chrome #111 Lebron = 2500

    2009 Topps #321 Curry = 135
    2009 Topps Chrome #101 = 30

Agreed. But the Chrome tops out at 999.

this just popped for me, had no idea they were selling for so much, this order was logged on December 22, I may have severely underestimated the value on the submission sheet.
