1980 Topps baseball rack pack rip!

I've been slowly putting together a 1980 Topps baseball set in PSA 8 or better over the past few years with as many self-submitted pack-pulled cards as possible and decided to rip a rack pack this afternoon to see if I might be able to fill a few spaces in the set. Per my standing rule of ripping only those packs with visible defects, this rack was missing its header card, so approval for rippage was easily obtained, lol...

The far section (E&F sheets) was pretty tough centering-wise, but the middle and header sections were much nicer, yielding several viable candidates for grading, including a trio of HOFers.

Bring some to RIP when we go to Millers!

Make sure you start a new thread when everything is confirmed. Will be nice to get some more people to go!

Very nice Winfield, I believe that may be the toughest HOF'er
in the 80 set to get a PSA 10. It seems they all have those
blue splotches to the left of his head.
    Yours has great centering.

Outside of Winfield and the two obvious - Ryan and Henderson - Gossage is darned tough in 10 too

Thanks for sharing Tim, and a nice couple hits! Something about a nicely centered 80 Topps I love. It's almost like the team/position banners make an OC one look even worse that it is, but makes a centered one even more beautiful!!

I truly have come to believe that they specially inserted a Mike Jorgensen into every 1980 pack issued.

OK, so utilizing rule of ripping only those packs with visible defects, I decided to rip a 78 rack pack that exhibited a creased header card and some shelf wear, since I am also working on a self-submitted 1978 Topps baseball set in PSA 8 or better.

Ok, the 78 rack is history~some nicely centered cards again in this rack for my graded set. Pulled both Murphy and Whitaker rookie cards~would have preferred the Molitor RC, but both these cards are very nice. too. Carew and Garvey look pretty sharp, as well. The Fred Lynn card is one of the toughest in the set and was a pop 0 in PSA 10 until very recently. I don't think this one is going to grade PSA 10, but I'd be happy with a 9. Pat Zachry always causes me to involuntarily wince when I recall The Midnight Massacre, lol..

Don't listen to Mike, Tim. You have a perfectly logical process for what gets ripped and I enjoy every second of it.

Sorry Mike. Maybe one of these days you'll get on the occasional rip band wagon and liberate some of those 70s HOFers.

He just picked up a 75 rack pack with a punched header card that seemed pretty sharp~that would be a great place to start!

Is the Carew a tough card? The OPC version is a nightmare card to find centered. I got a chance to meet Parker at the allstar game last year. He was a nice guy. Not much of a crowd around him.

It is one of the tougher stars, in my experience. Speaking of 78 OPC Carew, I pulled this one from a wax pack several years back.

Tim - not too often as a male someone can say "nice rack" and you take it as a compliment image
    Great batch of cards!
