FS: Shield Nickel 1874 PCGS 64-SOLD

Bought this one a few years ago from an estate auction where it was in a collection for over 50 years. Just got around to slabbing it. The obverse looks almost 65 to me, very clean and a nice satin luster. The two small spots are not that noticeable as this coin is not as dark as the TrueView picture. The reverse has a few hairlines on it, thus the downgrade. I think this coin is a high end 64 and should have at least gotten a +.

Last PCGS sold at auction for $540. CU PriceGuide = $450............. $SOLD

Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

From the photos provided that's a great looking "gem" coin. I've had some essentially flawless and crusty shield nickel gems come back graded 64 as well. Sometimes I think they downgrade a bit a little for die cracks, clash marks, etc.

But that's a heckuva blasty and clean coin for a 64 that is dripping with luster. Just noticed that in MS65 it fetches 3.8X more. That's a nice spread. And at $425 it's not a whole lot more than the several common dates in the series. The 1870's Philly dates have some good value.

    Good luck.
