1970's Baseball pack question

I remember reading somewhere on this board or elsewhere that certain years of Topps baseball cards were sent out in series, while others from the same year may have been equally distributed regardless of series. I have PSA packs from 1972 and 1973, neither of them have a series identified on the outside by PSA. If I recall 1972 was released in series whereas 1973 may not have been. Does anyone have any insight on this? Also is there anyway to tell the series the packs may be from? without opening them?

Appreciate any feedback thank you Craig

Both are in multiple series. 74 was the year they changed over to one series.

It's going to be tough/impossible in the slabs. You need to identify a front or back card and figure out what series it's from. IIRC, the 72 had a partially white wrapper so that's the area you would have the best chance of 'seeing through'. No idea on the 73s.

I am just a wax pack guy, one for every Topps set. But in 73 the cards were apparently all produced at the same time, and distributed all at once in some limited areas in packs. Maybe it was a test, as in 74 it became SOP. Not sure if any rack packs, like some wax packs, would have been "seriesless" in 1973

Topps first tested all series packs in late 1973. They are tougher to find. Both 72 and 73 packs were also produced in series, some of which were mixed. If the series is not noted on the flip, you might be able to determine the series if you can discern the card showing through the wrapper.

I would just rip it. Then again, that's how I feel about every pack. I'd love to get my hands on Tim's or Mike's hoard.

You'd have a better chance of procuring Ted Williams' head. image

To answer the OP, Tim nailed it as usually. Does your 1973 pack indicate all series like the example below? I would think not since you are asking the question.

The wax packs in 1972 would be mixed series such as 2nd/3rd, 4th/5th, etc. It will be hard to tell which cards are showing since they are already graded, but good luck.

Btw, Tim doesn't need a hammer to hammer nails.

to add I've seen some 1973 wax packs with mixed series like 1 and 2. Have not ever seen a all series pack without the all 660 card designation

correct Timothy. This is a box that I bought from BBCE years ago. Never knew the significance of it until it was wrapped by Steve a year or so ago. He told me how rare the "all series" 1973 wax packs were. Much rarer than the series 5--Schmidt--boxes. Sweet!
