So I bought some 79 Football packs on Ebay & this is what I found

1979 football packs with 1981 cards

I bought 7 packs of 1979 football on Ebay to rip and had to double check the listing after opening one. I would have thought something nefarious was happening if I hadn't just been perusing the Baseball Card Exchange website. Apparently Topps used some leftover 79 wrappers to pack some of the 1981 football cards. I think the seller had no idea. I am thinking about just ripping the rest. Maybe I will get a high grade Montana rookie??

I'm guessing you will not find a Montana RC - I would bet that these were opened and resealed (with the wrong cards). I'm guessing the person got their wrappers mixed up. I might be totally wrong (and probably am), but it sounds fishy, even if BBCE says it has happened before.

I've purchased 81 packs in 79 wrappers before, nothing nefarious going on there and it's quite likely the seller wouldn't know. Good luck on a high grade Montana!

    BBCE listing

Here is a link to the BBCE listing. I am not sure how common it was, so if it very unusual maybe you are right. I didn't buy the packs from BBCE, but just using their listing for an example. After looking again I noticed they have for sale 1980 cards in 79 wrappers as well. Wow, somebody working for Topps screwed up the number of wrappers versus cards ratio in 1979

I've opened legit 79 fb wrapped packs that had 1980 fb cards in them. Topps used them until they were gone!

Imagine if you opened 1979 packs in the year 1979 and found 1981 cards in them. Whoaa! Like back to the future.

I have a 1960 topps baseball five cent psa 8 pack in a 1958 wrapper and a 1962 topps baseball five cent psa 8 pack in a 1961 wrapper so they were doing this as far back as the early 60's (and likely earlier too although I haven't seen any examples older than my 60/58) and for other sports too besides football.

And they even recycled boxes as in 1977 they reused the 1975 baseball box with slightly different graphics to promote the 77 cards.
  • I'm never too certain about these mixed bag wax packs until someone pulls an '88 Fleer Jordan.

Definitely a common occurrence in 80-81 football, and your packs look legit. The one thing about 81s in 79 wrappers, there are only 12 cards in the packs (where 81 wrappers/packs have 15 cards). And if you ever see 79 wrappers in a rack pack, there will be 1980 Topps cards inside the packs. Good luck if you decide to rip!

Great information. You are indeed correct about the packs only having 12 cards as I am finding right now. I guess you need to factor that in when buying a box of 81 football in 79 wrappers. So interesting that there is one up on Ebay right now.

I have about 3/4 of a box with 81 FB in 79 wrappers. Topps is known for this , I have 78-79 hockey packs from a "fun" bag with 76-77 wrappers and other foot ball years with the wrong wrappers in the wax pack racks.
