Stoked about my Craig's List Find

Just picked this up today. Collecting is all about memories, and this machine certainly brings me back to my youth when there were 28 NFL teams and the helmet designs were way cooler image. I can remember chasing these things and trying to be super careful about putting the stickers on straight. It came with 2 complete sets of the 28 helmets as shown on the front of the machine:

That's awesome! Our Western Sizzlin was the only place that had one of those machines and I would beg my parents for quarters every time we went there trying to get them all. Loving that pick up!!!!!!

Had to go track mine down. image I parted ways with about 150 of these a couple of years ago (apparently I bought more helmets than cards as a kid), but I couldn't bring myself to move all of them. Far too many memories.

I miss the old school logos!

I remember IHOP used to give these out when you bought pancakes. That was back when IHOP's had the A frame roofs.

Thanks for the kinds words everyone. Galaxy, loved seeing the photo of you helmets (although it appears to have disappeared now). Somewhere in my stash of junk I still have a powder blue Houston Oilers helmet. Stingray, I could not agree more, the old style Patriots helmet is my favorite football helmet of all-time.
  • Nice! I remember getting those like it was yesterday....lots of fun!

Loved those helmets. Used to have a bunch of the baseball ones too. Still have a few but my football ones didn't make it.

I will say, I think the Bengals were the one team that definitely benefitted from the helmet change. The tiger stripes are much cooler.

    Great find.

My memory on these is getting the new Bengals helmet with the stripes when they changed in 1981. You couldnt get them out of the machines then, you had to buy the pencil sharpener that came inside the helmet and then remove it

It's actually Stone193, not 123. His IQ is 70 points higher than you're giving him credit forimage

I think my grandma many years back got me a mail-order cereal sort of deal for a set of mini MLB helmets (she only got me the NL set though) and I think I remember a commercial where Nolan Ryan does a similar promo asking "How 'bout a sovernier helmet of your favorite ball team?"

I've got a mini Chiefs helmet with a pencil sharpener in it. Used to use it a lot.

Anyone remember when you could go to Dairy Queen and get a sundae in a mini baseball helmet?
  • detroitfan2detroitfan2 Posts: 3,337 ✭✭✭✭
Lots of great comments. I had completely forgotten about the helmets with the pencil sharpeners in them. Also, believe it or not, I was thinking about old man stone too when I saw this item. As a side note, some research on www.gridiron-uniforms.com seems to show that the particular helmet combination as shown on the display card was from 1990 to 1992. Looks like I may need to start searching for an older "insert card" and some older helmets, I need to get back to my youth in the 70's. I'm curious when the price jump went from a quarter to 50 cents or more . . .

Sure. Anyone have kids who are fond of constantly refilling the helmets at home? image
