How About Some Help?

Hello,

Recently I submitted The cards from the Beckett book "300 Great Baseball Cards of the 20th Century" Which was published in 1999 for a Registry Set ... I would like to have the set Weighted but with some many years ,cards and $ value it is kind of tough as to where to go with this one ... Any help would be appreciated... Wow! Nine cards from the 1951 Bowman set . . . There are a few of those 51's that should definitely be deleted from the list (Early Wynn for instance).

    (Ouch . . . terrible typo corrected)
  • VArgha,

Here is What Beckett had to say about the 1951 Bowman Wynn card- "It's been said about Early Wynn that he would have thrown at his grandmother if she crowded the plate on him. Here the 300 game winner and HOFer appears to be lining up for just such a buzz pitch for grandma"

Any thoughts on where to go with Weighting?

This post deserves a reply for the time it took to create it.image

A weighting scale of 1-25 may not even be enough for this one. The big boy vintage cards are more than 25x the value/rarity, of say, a 1994 SP Rodriguez. If it is possible, maybe they should first weight the sets on a 1-10 scale, and then the individual cards 1-25. This could make a T206 Wagner PSA 8 250x the weight of a 1994 SP Rodriguez PSA 8. For specifics, I defer to the wiser collectors on these boards. Don't know the feasibility, but just a thought.

Vargha - you would dump Early Wynn before Joe Garagiola?????

I can't believe that the rookie cards of HOFers such as Ralph Kiner, Robin Roberts, and Jim Bunning, plus such major rarities as the '63 Fleer Joe Adc ock [stupid censoring software], are not listed, but an Upper Deck Collector's Choice Michael Jordan is. image

With this set, I don't even think 1 to 250 does it justice. It has cards I can pick up at any dealer for a dollar or two in Mint condition, and cards that are almost impossible to find in any condition.

I was pretty tired last night. Garagiola would be the first to go. Also, since Bowman basically duplicated many pictures from 1950 to 1951, cards like Ted Williams are almost identical in appearance. Finally (maybe), having once owned the complete 1949 Bowman set, I can say that the Campanella card from that set is one of the ugliest cards ever printed. The 1951 Campy and Snider cards completely outshine their 1949 rookie counterparts.
  • Guys ,

I would like to continue the debate in two separate threads ....

1.) Weighting on the set as it is

2.) Debate on the cards in the set ....

I am Establishing two separate threads ... Just an aside the debate about which cards belong and do not is the reason I love this book it is a great conversation starter among people in our hobby ... No I do not agree with all the author's choices for cards but nobody would thanks for your interest in this thread I will respond to the the authors description of individual cards in the debate thread....
