1972 Julius Erving (Your opinions)

I just bought this long sought card and wanted to see what you all thought about the card. With so many reprints and raw cards being trimmed I wanted to first get your expertise on whether this card looks clean.

Next I was interested in seeing what grade (ball park) you might think it would get.

Thanks!

    Legit. PSA 5.

    Congrats on a great card!

It looks real to me. It's hard to tell what's going on that lower left corner. I will say PSA 5/6. I like the fact you got the card with the fish eye near his elbow. Congrats.

Not a basketball collector, but I do like the rough edge up top. I know some love four straight edges, but I love the rough cut look, as if it came out of the machine yesterday.

I would say a 4/5. Beautiful card either way.
Looking for high grade rookie cards and unopened boxes/cases
  • Much thanks for the feedback.

I can't tell you how stoked I am to finally have this card. It nearly at the top of my card bucket list.

  • Great card, undervalued in my opinion. Nice pick up.
  • Interesting side note...

I jut received the card today along with a 1972 Wilt Chamberlain. So when I pulled them out first thing i did as always is measure it against cards I know are not trimmed. The Wilt was definitely not trimmed however the Dr. J card definitely shows classic signs of being trimmed. Top to Bottom is fine but left to right I matched it up with 10 other cards that are not trimmed and in every instance it was ever so slightly shorter than the others.

    Question for you all.

Does this guarantee the card has been trimmed or is there cases where cards were cut differently for 1972 basketball. It's a nice card and would of been completely happy with the card if not for being trimmed so before I return it I want to make sure that it is trimmed.

I sold you the card. I certainly didn't notice anything that looked like trimming to me, but I don't have other '72s to compare it against. I bought it in a large lot of vintage cards from someone. Of course happy to offer you a return if you'd like. Whatever you want to do, we should definitely do it quickly, as I'll want to request a return/refund from the person I purchased it from if indeed it is trimmed. Feel free to message me. Thanks!

There is a potential of size variation straight out of the pack, so being undersize alone does not indicate trimming. Depending how far undersize it is, it could prevent it from getting into a PSA holder, however, with the dreaded MINSIZEREQ.

I agree with Larkin. Cards from that era are not consistently sized. I have cards that are oversized and undersized (but not trimmed) both horizontally and vertically.

Looks like left side is short.

Take the man up on his offer to return.

IMO 72's didn't have major min size problems

I just have to ask, classic signs of trimming? Other than it seems ever so slightly shorter what are these classic signs?

I am just curious, having seen different levels of trimming in different fields of paper collectibles including micro trimming what signs does this card give off?

If you can post up high resolution images of both the front and back of the card not in a case of any sort, the closer to the edges the better and I can point out any obvious signs.

I do wonder how many high end sports cards have been receiving the micro trimming treatment over the last half decade or so which is damn near undetectable on certain cardstocks.

  • I sent you a PM Ken.

Had no clue the seller was on this board as well. Want to point out to the board as it should be stated that Kencope has been great to deal with and by no means do I think there was any misdoings on his part. These things just are a part of the hobby that we all have to deal with from time to time.
