I purchased it from Staples Numismatics, back at the 2003 NYINC. The vendor speculated that the coin may have survived a fire.

I've had coins that had that look that I knew survived a fire. If you examine the surfaces under a high power scope you'll actually see a difference in the grain structure in the adjacent dark areas.

BTW - neat looking coin, 1st one I've seen outside of Krause.
