If you are in the market for a scanner the V600 is amazing. I just got this today and started tinkering with it and I am thrilled with the image quality.
The first is my HP 8610 all in one.
The second is the V600.

So nice to see a scan of this card that does it justice!
Are you using the Epson Scan software?
I just clicked on the icon and got started.
Does it do the modern very shinny stuff like refractors?
Doesn't scan refractors well.
I have a V500 Epson and love it.
This picture is from a slide and it mesmerizes me:
The only negative about their line is that they use a multi-LED array for the light source which leaves streaks on refractor finishes. If they'd switch to a Xenon tube, they would have the best home scanner on the market, hands down.
The entire Epson line scans well, I bought the V330 to be able to develop slides and negatives...it does amazing work.

I agree, Epson makes the best low-end scanners on the market from my experience. I have an old Epson 3590 that is still going strong. However, I do need to remove the glass and clean it from the inside, it has developed some kind of fog across the bed of the scanner.

Thanks to all of you here on this thread. I have purchased the Epson v600 from AMAZON FOR ABOUT $200. I Love it!! I am now in the need for a template, and I may go to Office Depot? I have scanned just under 100 PSA graded cards and have attached them to my REGISTRY sets, listed under anthony6125@att.net.
I'll keep you updated. Thanks,

I just picked this up for Christmas and have a few questions.
1) How do you get the black background?
2) When I try to scan multiple cards, the auto scan feature crops out one of the edges of the PSA case itself. Is there a way to scan the entire canvas of the scanner, instead of the "smart" feature stepping in?
So far, I am impressed with the quality vs. my HP. Below are a few 1951 Ringside pics.

The biggest lesson I've learned in this hobby, and in life, is that if you have a strong conviction, you owe it to yourself to see it through. Don't sell yourself, or your investments, short. Unless the facts change. Then sell it all.
I don't have this particular scanner, but I assume they're all pretty much the same in regards to your question: scan with the lid open.
Dodgers collection scans | Brett Butler registry | 1978 Dodgers - straight 9s, homie
I put black construction paper on top that works too.

Dark room with the lid open is how I do it. You can't get it pretty dark with the lights on but to get the pitch black look definitely scan with the lights off or maybe just a TV on in the distance.
