Michael Jordan Signing Question

Headed to the All-Star game weekend in Toronto. Having never been to one, I have a couple of questions that some might know the answer to:

I'm not really an auto collector, but I've always thought it would be cool to get his RC Fleer signed for my son. We're guests of a client that is a premium sponsor of the game, so it's possible we'll be meeting some past players before the game.

1) Does MJ even attend all-star weekend?
2) Does he sign his RC card?
3) I'm not even sure I know the proper etiquette for autos in a situation like this

Appreciate any thoughts you have.

Thanks in advance.

  • In my experience if he sees you as a fan asking for his auto it will be near impossible, he could just care less about you and your fandom. That being said, I have been surprised to see how gracious he is with signing for people who provide a service for him. A friend works security for an annual summer event and is usually assigned to Jordan who has been accommodating to signing anything for him.

Caveat - It's my understanding he either refuses to sign his fleer card now, or his Upper Deck contract prohibits him from doing so. I think it is even mentioned on his flight school website that he won't sign it there either.

With that said though, if this is a special corporate/sponsor event, sometimes athletes are given some leeway. It is all about who shells out the most money. I have been to sporting events in VIP sections, Boxes, etc. where athletes/celebs can do more because whoever is hosting the event pays a royalty to the person's endorsement company. Not to say this will happen, but I have seen it before.

Good point--I guess I'll find out for sure Sunday. I hadn't realized the restriction on the Fleer RC card, so thanks for the link.

  • Bring a few cards of most players and get something generic for everyone else. Sounds like fun, would love to hear about it when it's over.

You will have a better chance of him signing something UNC related.

He won't touch any card because of his contract. I have talked to several people that went to his golf tournament and they said a jersey is the fist thing he will sign.
  • he still signs the fleer sticker...the regular fleer instantly becomes 15k+ if he touches it. he's not gonna do it.

  • Serious? I remember him dishing at Venice back in the summer of '82 at the main court after they won the title. What a day! He showed off some moves and then hung out with a very large throng of folks while the bodybuilders, skaters and surfers went about their details. Surreal. He was and still is one of coolest people I've ever met.

If his regular card is 15K then what would be the price of his sticker? I would say close to the same price as his regular. Signing one over the other does not make sense to me. Have fun at the All-Star game. If you run into Magic Johnson tell him Stan Pounder said hello. Magic and I go way back.

I'm not sure if you do your research or not, but Jordan sticker auto's go for less then 2K. Two closed recently for $1400 and $1600. Dan I hope you have a great time this weekend. I'm hoping to go to the game next year in Charlotte.

  • If he doesn't sign 1986 Fleer Premier Rookie Card, but would allow sign photo. Can I print out high resolution 8x10 photo of his 1986 Fleer that is not a card & he will be able to sign it?

    Wanna overnight me yours? lol.

I have a 7 RC I could crack out, but probably won't. I'm not even sure he'll be there (I just assumed with his stature in the NBA he would be invited/attend each NBA all-star game--we'll see if that's a bad assumption).

I have an 88 Fleer maybe he'll sign.

I'll say hi to Magic for you, Stan. Kinda miss your old avatar already.

Edited to add: Kirk's the guy I need on the case. A better autograph hound I have not seen.

One of my old running buddies still goes to the Lake Tahoe celebrity golf tournament and he said Jordan will only sign hats, shirts, pieces of paper, etc. He will not sign cards, photos, balls (any kind), golf flags, basically anything you might expect to find on eBay the next day. Generally he does sign, but does so with one pen across a barrier and while walking and he simply skips over anyone with items he can't or won't sign, and only after practice or after the round is done.

Dan ... best of luck. Let us know how it went.
    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • There is some nice talent in Toronto. Enjoy the weekend!

    How did it go?

I'll post some pictures later, but it was AWESOME. More of an experience than a basketball game. I loved every minute of it.

Since it was Kobe's swan song, there were a lot of former NBA players there roaming around the suite area. Robert Horry, Dell Curry, Michael Jordan (just missed seeing him), and Magic. I got a pic with Magic, though it was kind of a photo bomb. I asked him for a pic the same time a family did so we're all in it together. He was nice enough but had to run before signing my ticket.

MJ was around but apparently completely untouchable. Not surprising. A lot of old timers like Bill Russell, Bob Lanier were around as well.

Here's what I learned (probably obvious to some of you veterans lol)

    1) Left unguarded, these guys hit darn near every shot. Amazing how skilled and athletic they are. I've been to many NBA games, but it's my first in-person AS game, and these guys are just incredibly good. Jumping out of the gym, drilling 3 after 3 after 3. Pace of the game was so fast.

    2) The game was basically a 3pt and dunk clinic. No defense. West scores 196 points. Curry hits a half court shot to end the game. Enough said.

    3) I'm not, shall we say, the right gender/proportions to really get the attention of athletes for a quick chat or auto. Such is life. All good.

    4) I was really impressed how much the crowd (a fair number of whom seemed to be Canadians based on all the raptor jerseys) really appreciated the overall career of Kobe. I'd have to agree. Not one of my favorite players, but clearly one of the NBA's very best. Much respect for Kobe's accomplishments on the court. Basketball seems to be a huge draw these days in Toronto--helps when your team is 2nd in the East currently.

Sure did. He told me to tell Stan "Quarter" Pounder that you still owe him lunch from the mess you left at his Bellagio suite. Also, you're now off his Christmas Card list.
