1844 Seated Liberty Quarter - Shield line doubling (Extra Lines)

oih82w8oih82w8 Posts: 12,481 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was doing my usual perusing the internet last night and stumbled across this 1844 Seated Quarter with some unusual "extra shield lines"; vertical lines extending beyond the horizontal and going below the mail shield outline on the viewers left. I checked my CPG and this one was not listed, so I am asking the Forum members if they have seen anything similar in some of the other guides out there in print form.

Thank you for your interest and comments!

Now that Coinfacts (PCGS) is back up, most if not all of this date share the same shield "extra lines".

    Interesting (to me) nevertheless.

interesting but not uncommon with seated quarters, briggs mentions this in his book for many different dates

Just checked mine and it is the same with the horizontal and vertical shield lines - like ebaybuyer said; common.

What would be cool to find one in a terminal die state with a cud in the 'TES OF' area where the die cracks are present.

The die making process in that era required a bit of hand finishing of the dies to remove a centering mark left by the hub. Quite often this left stray lines.
