Interesting/informative ebay situation

Long story short....I bought a big magazine collection with a lot of complete year sets. Been selling them on ebay, many overseas, but always use the ebay global shipping program as I dont want the headaches of international shipping. Always worked well until......

I get an email from ebay today saying that the last shipment was too heavy and that the buyer would be refunded and I would also keep my money. This was interesting because when the buyer purchased 8 items (10-15 lbs each) and used their cart for one shipping price. I called ebay as I didnt think that was allowed on GSP sales, plus when trying to print the shipping label, it actually told me, they had to be mailed separately. The ebay CSR said it was OK since the buyer used the cart system and didnt ask for combined shipping. I informed her, it would be approx 100 pounds, which she said was ok.

The real question was, if I keep the money and the buyer keeps the money, what happens to the items. With a little research, I found that ebay has a third party seller resell the items ON ebay and that usually, they use the same photos and listing as the original seller (me). Froma a standpoint of money, both parties are whole, but I have to question how scrupulous this system could turn out. The buyer cannot leave a neg (Shouldnt anyway but you never know) in this situation, so I am also covered there.

But does anyone else think that this system can be manipulated by a person in the right position? And also, why would ebay not just split the item up and send two boxes. Seems they dont lose as much there and they make the buyer happy by getting his item
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

It was a rare combination of circumstances that caused the issue to pop up. You recognized the issue and should have done it the way you knew it needed to be done. If that means the shipment needed to be split up, or the order needed to be modified or cancelled if the buyer wasn't agreeable, then that's what you needed to do. The Ebay rep you spoke with did not understand the issue, and had no clue about the limits you were talking about. And also, why would ebay not just split the item up and send two boxes. Seems they dont lose as much there and they make the buyer happy by getting his item Ebay or GSP would not do that for the same reason you didn't split in two boxes and lose money to make buyer happy.
