New (for me) and WEIRD letter from Paypal

Sold a coin for $239 and got this:

" You received a payment from ...

Here are the details:

(identifying data deleted by me)

The money is in your pending balance and typically available 21 days from the transaction date, or once the buyer confirms they're happy with the item.

We're holding the money because this transaction may involve higher than usual risk. This may be because:

We found an unusual change in selling price for this transaction.

The transaction is inconsistent with your business model.

You're selling an item that can potentially cause dissatisfaction with customers.

Your account was inactive for a while.

Here's what you can do to speed things up:

If you used USPS, UPS, or FedEx, provide a tracking number. Your money will be available within 3 days of the delivery date (7 days if you're shipping to an international location).

Mark your item as shipped on the Transaction Details page. Your money will be available within 7 days of the shipping date (14 days if you're shipping to an international location).

If your item doesn't need to be shipped (e-book, piano lessons, etc.), mark the order as processed and provide details. Your money will be available within 7 days after you mark as processed (14 days if your buyer is based internationally).

Thanks,

PayPal"

My account has not been inactive. I did list the coin for $20 less originally, then revised the BIN.

What kind of pretzel logic algorithim is Paypal using to monitor our ebay transactions?

I think their touchiness is an indication of the number of fraudulent transaction they are seeing. You, unfortunately, are now being punished because the scammers are running wild. If you stay within their rules you shouldn't have a problem other than the delay in getting paid. I hope everything works out well for you.

You could always call them. Good chance they take off the hold with a phone call.

Paypal has been doing this to people in a seemingly arbitrary fashion for years. You'd think the recently settled class action lawsuit would get them to stop; but, the abuse keeps on coming.

It'll be available three days after confirmed delivery. As long as you can prove delivery, you'll be OK.

I don't terribly mind the wait, it just seems very odd that they would do this to lil'ol' me considering years of no problem selling, a 100% positive rating, feedback score of ~2000, a cpl grand sitting in my Paypud account, etc.

Perhaps Bayard is right, it is arbitrary-random...

    So far, in this thread:

    "Scammers are running wild."

"Paypal. . . the abuse keeps on coming."

Paypal is making an attempt at protecting themselves, thus protecting you from fraud.

I'd allow them to do their job in the hopes they'll have some success.

Paypal procedures have been kinda weird to me in the past; paying to the seller is apparently instantaneous, receiving payment on eBay items is usually "held" onto because of an e-check(?) for a couple of days.

Is an e-check a payment to derives from a (credit?) source other than cash in the bank?

They did this to me on a rather large sale of a camera lens... it was annoying

It is also possible that the buyer jumped the shark and called PayPal to vent prematurely about "not received yet" with out having initiated a claim. Stranger things have happened. I've seen USPS tracking go dormant for up to a week on items going from the East coast to the West coast - of course the many neurotic eBay buyers want everything delivered within 24 hours of payment, regardless of weather conditions, airline disruptions, yadda-yadda-yadda.

No. The letter from Paypud came minutes after the Buyer paid.

I wouldn't keep a couple grand in your paypal, but that is just my .02. If for some reason PayPal wants to freeze your funds, you do not have the same protections as a credit card or even a bank account.

random flag was triggered in the paypal software. Happens all the time, just to other people. All will work out as long as both parties are playing by the rules.

do not consider it paypal abuse. consider it paypal trying to protect all the parties, including themselves.

    was it a phishing email?

did you go to PAYPAL to confirm (not through link in email)
  • georgiacop50georgiacop50 Posts: 2,909 ✭✭✭✭
No it's not a phisher. It shows as pending.

If derryb says it's random, thats good enuff for me. He's a terribly smart guy. Really.

Be glad two guys with Pay Pal I.D. tags didn't show up at your door. In the meantime, try to enjoy my humor in the face of adversity.
