2018 WWI Commem design contest

BackroadJunkieBackroadJunkie Posts: 3,745 ✭✭✭✭✭
The Mint is holding a contest for the design of the WWI Centennial Commem. (Don't blame the mint. This contest is an Act of Congress...)

The United States Mint is pleased to announce a public competition to design the 2018 World War I American Veterans Centennial Silver Dollar. This competition is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are at least 18 years or older.

During Phase One of the competition, which is open from February 29–April 28, 2016, artists are encouraged to submit their contact information and three to five work samples using the online form.

Up to 20 applicants from Phase One will be selected to participate in Phase Two, where they will create and submit designs and plasters for the final coin.

More info on the Mint's website:

WWI Centennial 2018 Commemorative Coin Design Competition

Oh, and I would also like to lobby for a commemorative in 2019 for the sesquicentennial of the Transcontinental Railroad. (1869-2019)

I can't see top artists being bothered with a "contest" of this sort. It seems like a good art school project, however. (Are you aware that the winning design of the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial was the result of a class project? The instructor in the class gave it a B+. The designer, Maya Lin submitted the design to the national competition on her own and won the contest.)
    All glory is fleeting.

I have a vision of a large group of nubile young ladies intertwined in simulated Combat.

One young lady to represent each of the countries involved in the conflict. Of course a

nip slip or two would have to be strictly forbidden. Our country is more prudish now than

It was in 1916, when the SLQ came out.

A retro Peace dollar would be really nice especially if struck in high relief...just my opinion.

Thanks, I'll probably give it a go. One thing that is different about this competition, compared to other recent contests, is that the chosen artist will actually sculpt the design as well. I think that is a good move on the Mint's part.

It would be poignant to have, "The War to End All Wars", on one of the sides.

Whatever you design, make sure it's as sterile, unoffensive, and politically correct as possible.

Really? You take this opportunity to denigrate a very talented forum member who has been honest and forthright about his artistic endeavors on this coin forum.

Seems to be a veiled attempt to mince your words when you labeled Mr. Carr a fake coin artist. Fake coin artist or fake con artist, could be blurring the line here.

Why the attack on Dan Carr? Totally uncalled for.

    Wow Dan !
Though I've been through every page of your website it is nice to see that resume drawn up in such detail by an outsider . He did a wonderful job in showing a majority of examples you've created and a nice history of your different accomplishments, which brings us to the current day .
How anyone can deny the amazing mark you've made on the world of numismatics is beyond me.

Keep on creating and finding new ways to amaze us all with your creations .
Congrats my friend and good luck in the competition image
    Sincerely, BP
