1989 Upper Deck High Series sequencing...

So I bought a couple of 1989 Upper Deck High Series FASC boxes from MantleFan23. They arrived in great shape. I bought them to bust open. So I started opening the first box and did very well with the Star Rookie cards just not the players I had hoped for. Here is what I got from the first box.

(1) #1 Ken Griffey Jr. I was happy to hit this card as the rest of what was in this box was crazy!!

(2) #3 Tony Chance

(1) #4 David Otto

(1) #5 Sandy Alomar Jr.

(1) #6 Rolando Roomes

(1) #8 Cris Carpenter

(5) #11 Ron Jones

(8) #12 Luis De Los Santos

(2) #13 Gary Sheffield

(3) #14 Mike Harkey

(14) #15 Lance Blankenship Fourteen!!!! WTF.. I had one whole stack that had one in each pack and a couple packs with 2 in it!!

(4) #16 William Brennan

(3) #17 John Smoltz

(4) #18 Ramon Martinez

(2) #19 Mark Lemke

(1) #20 Juan Bell

(1) #21 Rey Palacios

(1) #22 Felix Jose

(1) #23 Van Snider

(1) #25 Randy Johnson (At least I got the 2 big rookies out of this box.)

(1) #26 Carlo Quintana

The second box had very similar collation as the first, thankfully the players changed.

(1) #3 Tony Chance

(6) #8 Cris Carpenter

(1) #9 Greg Jefferies

(1) #10 Doug Dascenzo

(1) #11 Ron Jones

(10) #12 Luis De Los Santos (That's (18) of this guy in 2 boxes!! Wish it was the Griffey..)

(2) #13 Gary Sheffield

(1) #14 Mike Harkey

(1) #15 Lance Blankenship

(2) #16 William Brennan

(1) #17 John Smoltz

(1) #18 Ramon Martinez

(1) #19 Mark Lemke

(1) #20 Juan Bell

(1) #21 Rey Palzcios

(1) #22 Felix Jose

(1) #23 Van Snider

(1) #24 Dante Bichette

(11) #25 Randy Johnson (I'm happy that it was at least Randy Johnson that hit this many times. Again, I wish it would have been "The Kid") image

(1) #26 Carlos Quintana

The Randy Johnson's are all very well centered with nice holograms, but several have slightly dinged lower right corners, so not worthy of submitting. There may be a few in the group worth sending in though...

The sequencing became very predictable as the rookies either were in an ascending or descending order down the respective stack of 9 packs. So the theory of cherrypicking the Griffey is absolutely plausible, although the sequencing only applied to that particular column of pack and changed with the next column. Interestingly the bottom (2) columns seemed to have one particular rookie that showed in each pack, sometimes twice within each pack.

I was happy to have pulled (2) of the Jim Abbott Triple Exposures, a Nolan Ryan triple exposure and a Nolan Ryan throwing the football. The last box had one of the Jim Abbott's and both of the Nolan Ryan's. Overall it was a very fun break.

  • Crazy is right. There was a recent thread with similar results. Just think that someone out there has hit 10-15 Griffeys in a box. Just imagine. Thats a good day.

I once knew a kid from my town that hit 2 Griffeys in 1 pack that was cool.

I once read about an Upper Deck employee who walked out of the factory with an 800 ct box full of Griffeys
