Acquiring Patch/Relic Items for Cards

With all of the major auctions that we saw come and go in the last few weeks, I was wondering something. Maybe one of you is way more in the know.
I know the folks at UD, Topps, Panini, etc. have deep pockets and endless contacts to acquire jerseys, warm up suits, gloves, balls, bats, and everything else. Maybe these things are received directly from the players themselves, or through agents. I was wondering if any of these card companies are the ones that bid up some of these memorabilia items in auctions. $20,000 for a jersey/uniform from a prominent player during a special season is nothing for Upperdeck or these other companies. I'm sure they'll make that back on the first day of the production run that features the relic. I'm sure these companies don't need the auctions because they have all their connections, but I was just curious if anyone else knew if this was happening...

interesting read
I, for one, am completely shocked that there is deception and corruption in this hobby.

It's astonishing, isn't it...

For historical items, the card companies absolutely do dive into auctions to purchase items.
For current players, they have deals with all of the leagues and players to acquire jerseys, etc. When it's a particularly historic moment or game, the player will just change jerseys multiple times per game to bump up the supply of materials.
hacked up for memorabilia cards to be inserted into packs. It does bother,
irritate and PI$$ me off when jerseys and bats from pre 1980 HoFers are destroyed.
These are rare treasures that should not be destroyed.
I know they did presidential sigs. several years ago but to me its not the same.
Maybe next time they could cut up a Van Gohg or Picasso and parcel those out
to the art world.

I agree with this somewhat depending on if the jersey is in good condition or not. If it is tattered and torn--not due to game wear--I have no problem with it being cut up. Now if it is a tattered and torn 1975 WS uniform of Pete Rose, because he slides into 2nd base or collides with Fisk at home plate, that's much different.
The whole Panini article is kind of sickening. All that is is greed. It is not for the love of the game. Granted, it is just a business, but when you have to lie to create the illusion of something that is rare and sought after, it becomes corrupt. I'm surprised that they are still able to sell as much as they do...there will always be an issue with trust in the minds of collectors.
There's been more than one article written over the last 10 years about known fakes getting purchased and cut up. One I remember is a card company representative buying multiple Jeter jerseys from a known forger for pennies on the dollar instead of spending thousands on a known authentic Jeter jersey.
There are a lot of legitimate relic cards being turned into fakes on the secondary market as well.
In what way? Are people removing the items from the card and replacing with fake material? What do they do with the relics they remove? I would imagine it would be hard to authenticate the stuff that has already been ripped up.
I guess this could be one thing they do with it...at least this person is being honest and saying he/she took it out of Topps card and is reselling it...which is slimy as well.
