Where are the dies?

Whatever happened to the original dies used for the early large cents (or any early US coinage for that matter)? Are they sitting in a museum somewhere or have they been lost to history? I would love to see them if they're still around.

Thought they were de-faced and sold as scrape metal. Seem to remember reading that way back when.

Most were discarded and are lost, a few stray dies remain in the ANS and ANA collections. By far the largest group known was recently dug up in Carson City but many of those are in terrible condition.
