The second one looks like a 1788 Massachusetts Cent

    no period after Mass.

Couldn't tell you if real, How much it may be worth,

but it's in rough damaged shape.

The first one looks like a Machin's Mills Copper Halfpenny

maybe 1774, but looks funny & may not be real.

Others will know way more than I.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking the 1788 was a lamination error.

Haven't seen one like it and was hoping someone knew something about the coin. Think it's 1774 and there are many types for that year...

If you look at the reverse has the same markings at bottom.

I took a look in the Bowers book on Colonials and could not find a Machin's Mills piece with an obv. even close to your coin. So maybe it is another counterfeit of the period?

The Mass cent looks real to me but with an unfortunate major planchet flaw on the rev, replacing the eagle's head with a red distress pennant. It is an interesting piece as a result but I have reservations as to whether it would be gradable.

Thanks for your response. If you look at the reverse it has the same markings as obv.

Machin Mills were counterfeits of the English George III halfpence made in Newburgh, NY. Similar 'copies' were the Tory Coppers.

I do not know what you have but it could be authentic, contemporary counterfeit, or one of the above.

The 1774 is not a Machin's Mills issue. The "build quality" says contemporary counterfeit.

Do these counterfeits have a collector following?
