Shield Cents in PCGS Holders

Although I have almost zero interest in post-1964 coins other than my annual Mint Set and Proof Set purchases, I looked at purchasing a 2010-present Shield Cent as it would help complete one of my Registry Sets with the hope of finding one on Ebay real cheap. What I noticed is that every PCGS Shield Cent is placed in the holder with the reverse (Shield) showing on the front of the holder with Lincoln/date on the reverse of the holder. My question is... "Why?" Isn't the Shield reverse just the current standard reverse just like the Memorial reverse was the standard reverse between 1959-2008? Why focus on the Shield reverse with the placement in the holder? I can understand the preference to put the state quarters with the reverse on the holder front as that's a unique characteristic with the date, but the Shield reverse has nothing unique about it. It may be completely trivial in the grand scheme of things, but I'd rather have Lincoln facing the front of the holder.

As the submitter to PCGS, you can designate which side faces the front of the slab. Most of these bulk submissions are focused on the SHield Design, therfore the reverse is facing forward...I have been wrong before.

Thanks. I'm not about to submit a Shield Cent and pay a submittal fee that is higher than the Ebay purchase price. It does appear that having the Shield facing forward seems to be the default coin placement which does seem counter to almost all other coins placed in holders.

As a collector of the entire Lincoln cent collection I have TRIED to deal with this issue for a number of years. At some point I WILL submit all my 2010 thru 2016 coins for reholder with the obverse and YEAR showing on the front of the holder, consistant with all other year Lincoln cents except 2009. I MIGHT even send those four coins in also. (ie) Proof coin collection. Steve

I just did a quick search on "PCGS Shield Cent", and bigger majorit were SHield Side forward...there were exceptions;

The last 2 are shield side forward. The labels are reversed also with the reverse label on the forward side. The grade label is on the same side as Lincoln but both are on the reverse.

$109.99 for a 2012 penny. Ouch! If I wanted a MS67RD bad enough, I think it would be cheaper to buy a few 2012 mint sets, send the pennies in for grading and hope for the best and sell the rest.

I may have my work cut out for me to find 1 PCGS Shield Cent for <$10 with lincoln on the forward side.

With my email to PCGS about the basic Morgan Dollar set, I also asked about why the default placement for Shield Cents has the reverse on the forward side. The response doesn't really answer the question.

With regards to the Lincoln Shield Cent, the best thing to do is contact the PCGS Customer Service Department (1-800-447-8848 or info@pcgs.com) and inquire with a representative as to why it is placed in the holder this way, and, if it can be placed in the holder with Lincoln on the front of the holder.
