Odd PCGS Submission

JeffMTampaJeffMTampa Posts: 3,263 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was looking through the "Shared Orders" section on the PCGS Grading site and came across what seems to me as a very odd submission. The single item in the submission is a 1971 1C. It was logged into PCGS on Jan. 19 and shipped on Jan. 25, so it's likely this was an Express Order (pricey).

The coin was graded as "Counterfeit":image

Why would a 1C coin be counterfeited?

Why would somebody send in such a coin for an "Express Order"?

I must be missing something.image

I love them Barber Halves.....

My humble guess is that it was some kind of variety or error that the owner thought would make them wildly rich. And it turned out to be a fake.

Maybe to prove a point to a customer? Maybe a customer's submission that was insisted on??
