These are really testing my sanity today. The one is clearly "Frank W..." yet I can't figure it out. The first one looks like "Wayne...". I have identified approximately 300 signatures on these pages but keep striking out with these. I have been successfully comparing rosters and coaching staffs with others but not these 3. Maddening!

I've been trying to figure out the first one for about 30 minutes. Wayne was my initial thought as well. I'm wondering if it's an equipment manager, bat boy, or something similar that would not show up in rosters.

I don't believe I recognize any names from the 52 topps set and I definitely don't recognize autographs!

Hey! Thanks for the effort, I don't want to tell you how long I have been looking. Of the hundreds of autographs, all are from 1950-1953 and include lots of 1 season players but no minor leaguers. 2 trainers were among the signatures but no bat boys.

Thanks again for trying! Trust me I appreciate it!
  • How often do trainers, bat boys etc sign? Would drive me crazy. How do you figure those out? Goodluck

It doesn't seem to be very often. I figured them out as they were very legible. When you do keyword searches with the team name and the name you believe the signature to be, you will likely find some old periodical or something confirming who it is. One of the trainers I had in this book was the one for the Indians that tended to Herb Score after the terrible line drive incident (he's even in the old newspaper photos).

Joe ... just saw this list. How are you? Hope all is well. Could #1 be a team doctor, Wayne Anderson?

    Hey Doug!

I'd say that looks right to me! Wish I could find an example but it appears likely!

On a side note, I'm not very talented at making custom cards but here are some attempts with this lot:

Joe ... autos are different, but I think it's Wayne Anderson.

BTW, nice customs. Did you print them?

Yeah, just quickie designs in Microsoft Publisher, not photoshop or anything.

Identified the 2nd one - found multiple 1951 Pirates team balls with the same signature...seems to be the crappy rushed baseball signature of Milt Stock. Yay! By the way, I have another 6 or so to identify that I will post later. Pretty good considering I started with several hundred!

All from the original post have now been identified! The last one was identified by a member on sportscollectors.net!

The last of this entire lot that was unidentified has been posted in the original message above.

    Thanks again!

Joe - #3 - Jack Rensel. He was at one time involved in Public Relations for the Phillies. Seems like he was also heavily involved in trying to keep the Athletics in Philly back in the day. Sorry, could not find an exemplar.

I can't find an auto for #2, but could it be this player? He played from 1947-1951

    Don "Spider" Jorgensen

    Hey Doug,

Thanks, I edited it above. A member on SCN figured out Byrum Saam as well!

Joe - #1 - Ed H. - looks like he was NOT a player on the Phillies. Went thru the entire lifetime roster of the Phillies and the only "Eds" with a last name beginning with an "H" are:

    Hemingway

    Heusser and

    Holley.

Hey, thanks for the response. I thought this was a possibility but it seems he went by "John" from what I was originally reading. I found his autograph from that era on a team signed baseball and didn't see many similar characteristics. It could still be him but I'll wait a few days to call it or give up :-)

Dawg ... I also saw info about him, but all sigs I saw looked like this:

That big sweeping circle on the "J" seems to be how John Donald Jorgensen signed everything. Also, in all the ones I saw (excluding any legal documents) he used his nickname "Spider".

Thanks Doug. There were a few sigs out of place from other teams but generally they were correct. I wonder if this was another team doctor or something...
