Just toning, or worse....

Here is a nice FB Merc in an old rattler holder. This is the R in Liberty. There is a fiber attached to the R within the holder. Obviously it has caused the toning. Has it damaged vertical leg of the R? Based on your review would you 1. Return it on ebay? 2. Send it in for guarantee/possible restoration? 3. Break it out and dip it or at least clear off the fiber?

Whatever fiber that is in there is obviously responsible for the toning. I don't think the toning has progressed to the point of damage, but it's on it's way there. I would crack and dip or return.

Based on the image, there is underlying luster, so no real damage. However, the spot likely detracts from the eye appeal. What should be done depends very much on the value of the coin. If it is less than ca. $400, I would not spend any effort/money to fix the issue. If you crack it out and dip it, it will be raw and you may want ('need') to have it regraded. If you bought this off of Ebay, and the image was not clear enough for you to see this and little time has elapsed, you might have a a basis for returning it.
