1921 W551 Hand Cut Question

Hey y'all - Long time reader of this forum, but this is my first post. I currently have half of the 1921 W551 set. Two of them are graded, both are given the grade "A" - One is from PSA and the other SGC. I am going to be submitting my other 3 for grading to PSA soon (Cobb, Baker & Pipp).

My question centers around the grading criteria for these types of hand cuts. I read the information on the PSA submission site that says its not an exact science and that ultimately it just needs to have definable borders, be the right general size, etc. I have seen a number of examples on eBay that look almost identical and one is given a grade of 3 or 4 and the other is given the "A" designation.

I'm just wondering if any of you know how PSA determines whether a hand cut card should be graded, or just be given the authentic designation?

Thanks so much for your help!

When a strip card like W551 Cobb has dotted lines left and right as borders, then it needs to display part of the dotted line all along the edge to receive a numeric grade. If it's cut a little off to be missing the line at spots then it's given the authentic grade. The lines are either there, or they aren't, so the ones you see that look almost identical are in fact cut differently.

Thanks for the reply! It was a bit confusing, because I have seen some that seem to not have the dotted lines and get grades. It might also be poor scans too. This is just an example of one that I have seen out there...

    Here's a Bancroft SGC 9

I appreciate it. One of mine has the dotted lines, so that is good, but the others do not. Thanks

Your question was specifically how PSA treated them so that is how I replied. SGC handles them differently, so if you're looking at such cards for crossover to a numeric grade with PSA look at the card for lines instead of the grade.
