One you may want to block if you sell on eBay.

The card was $10 or so.

  • Sounds reasonable to me, actually. Mistakes happen.

Yeah, I don't think it's crazy but buying an item, costing the seller shipping both ways (60% of the actual cost of the card) because you made a mistake is someone I prefer not deal with if I have the choice. Just wanted to post and let those who sell know because I appreciate the same.

Why do you think you have to pay the shipping for him to return it?
  • Buyer pays return shipping if it is a return. They only charge the seller if it is a SNAD case.

Kind of annoying, but not a big deal on the level of ebay mishaps. At least he's not claiming an empty box. For $10, I wouldn't worry at all.

In the seller's return policy, the seller chooses as to who pays for return shipping. Most sellers have the buyer pay for it.
  • That is correct, mlbfan2. I have never seen a seller's return policy offer to have the seller pay return shipping. But it is possible!

If the seller has a "hassle free" return option, the buyer does not have to pay for return shipping and can print a prepaid return label right from the auction once the claim is filed. I'm not sure if it's ebay or the seller who foots the bill in that case.

Yes, I have always paid return shipping. I have ordered things several times I realized I had/didn't need. In my opinion, that is my fault not the seller's. Again, just my opinion. No big deal.

  • The "hassle free" thing has been phased out - stated reason is unclear, but I would suspect it is part of a general eBay push to move all sellers toward automating their return process over time. It's a bit in flux. But, regardless, the seller does not have to pay unless they opt in.

This is how they always get return shipping. We sell quit a few items so this happens several times a year. Without fail, every time this has ever happened, they send a follow up stating they either don't deserve to pay return shipping or it wasn't fair they had to do it. So we always have refunded return shipping too.

This is when they change their mind, for whatever reason, not when we make a mistake(which we do sometimes). It's unfair but the seller has no choice unless they want to receive negative feedback from time to time.

  • True. Sometimes you are forced with the choice of either paying $3 or getting a Neg. Probably worth the bucks to dodge it.

Try replying with: "Thank you for contacting us. Sorry to hear about the mistake. We'd be happy to accept a return on the item. Please initiate a return via the eBay system and once the item has be received, we will issue a full refund of your original purchase price and shipping." Some people are honest and will go from there.

If they do fight it all, just be glad that, at most, we're talking being out 2-way shipping on an item which is under $10. Yes, it is a high % of the item, but probably small in the grand scheme of things.

General question. I sometimes buy variant or variation cards on eBay. I use the seller's scans to find cards I want/need and include a note saying I only want the card in the scan and give the reason why . On more than one occasion I have gotten a very nice card, but one different from the scan. Whether or not they should, some sellers use stock photos. Some indicate as such in their listing ( and I pass on those), but many do not. In essence the card is not as described or at least different from the one shown in the scan. Who should pay the return shipping ?
    Topps Baseball-1948, 1951 to 2017
    Bowman Baseball -1948-1955
    Fleer Baseball-1923, 1959-2007

  • Ive done this and now have doubles. I view it as my fault and didnt do some simple homework or even too lazy to look that i already had it. Can't imagine asking for a refund that's my fault. In general, the buyer would pay return shipping. You're already doing him a favor.

Although its not so egregious that I would block him.

Only if the case is opened as not described / not authentic or any option that triggers a seller refund of shipping. Opening "hassle" free returns with did not like it or any of the first 4 or 5 reasons forces the buyer to pay for shipping via their own eBay.

These are minor issues, imo. The real problems are the ones who know which options to use in advance to get full refunds with return shipping, or who claim an empty box with no contents.

In any marketplace and in life you have to deal with that. .00000171% of transactions in the sports card category have this problem on eBay. It sucks that you have participated in that percent.

Yes, but the math is small consolation at present to addictedtoebay in this thread.
