I still think this is an underpriced set, that the boxes are in pretty short supply and these boxes will continue to appreciate.
1. You can get a BBCE box for around $1500 which has 36 packs for only a 132 card set. So you should get 3 of all the high dollar cards. The Pippen and Miller rookies in PSA 10 are each worth $1,000. The Rodman and two Jordan's are each over $500 and the Stockton is over $250. Please there are tons of low pop high dollar other hits giving a lot of chances to bust a box and come out ahead. Plus you will get three "Jordan sticker showing on the back" packs worth $100 apiece.
2. The boxes are in pretty short supply... eBay has 8 boxes up for sale today. If you compare that to 1985 and 1987 baseball. There are 3 cases and 20 boxes of 1985 topps alone for sale and another 40+ boxes of fleer and Donruss. For 1987 combined there are 20 cases plus over 300 boxes for sale today.
3. The short supply and high demand for the PSA 10s will keep these boxes being broken and thus keep uping the prices for the boxes left. In 2019 I see this box well over $2,000. Where else can you find a 132 card set with 4 Hall of Fame rookie cards in it with boxes still this affordable?
I can't believe how much prices on the cards in this set have taken off. I'm in the "thinking this set is underrated" camp. It's the first set I started collecting heavily as a kid and I've been working on it in PSA 10 for 6 years now. Seeing recent sale prices on some of these cards (which I only thought about looking at after reading this thread)... I'm sitting here struggling with the desire to sell them vs. seeing the completion of the set through. I'm near 90% complete... but I'm missing the Miller RC and the Drexler. I'm not sure I can stomach dropping $3K or more on those 2 cards... which would be more than I paid in total for the 116 cards I already have towards the set. I went through VCP last night and the current average total on my set is nearly $6800. I'm pretty emotionally attached to this set, but geez, it's hard not to serious contemplate parting with it. I probably won't, but it's tempting!!!
Since mid november (60 days worth), all BBCE wrapped:
$1,550
$1,555
$1,425
$1,500
$1,375
$1,450
$1,499
$1,225
$1,232
$1,366
That's $1,400+ average, and last 5 averages $1,350+. I suspect if one floated on the board at $1,250 it would get bought pretty quickly.
There's one currently listed at $1,380 DLVD.
Non-BBCE wrapped doesn't look like many, but they're all in the $1,000-1,100 range. If it were me, I'd pay the premium for BBCE wrapped on this one.
I also agree on this being an undervalued box in the longer run. The 1987s are much more rare, but the lack of quality in those boxes really makes me question the price tags. I'd much rather have 3 of these to 1 of those, even with these being a fair bit more accessible. Everything AFTER these is so high production volume, really makes these pretty attractive I think.
