Ideas For New Project

Since my Red Heart project is almost finished and the last few cards I need are not available at this time I am thinking about starting another PSA graded set. I am having a hard time deciding what set to work on. I don't want to do a complete Topps or Bowman set. I'm looking for a 50s or 60s set with 50 or so cards. I thought about either the 1963 Fleer baseball set or the 1964 Topps Stand-up set but there are things that I don't like about both sets. The Fleer set doesn't have Mantle in the set and I don't like the fact that the Stand-up cards are backless. I want to do a set that will not cost me a fortune to complete. I don't want to have to buy several $1K plus cards. Whichever set I decide on will be done in PSA 7 or higher. I am open for suggestions.

1954 Dan Dee potato chips is a great set to complete. I did it a few years back. Short prints that are challenging but a available and the Mantle is a really nice looking card

    T222's PSA 1 or better

1964 Topps Giants - great photos with interesting write-ups on the back with the added bonus of a black and white (mostly) action shot.

Thanks for the suggestions. I like the Dan Dee cards but the staining on the cards would drive me nuts. Finding nice PSA 7s would be tough. I'm not prepared to pay $4000 or more for a PSA 7 Mantle if I could find one. The 1964 Topps Giants cards are to large for me. I prefer something closer to normal size cards. I had thought about doing the 1969-70 Topps basketball set at one time. I have a raw mid grade set.

I started working on the 63 Fleer and really like the set. Sold off most of the stars but it isn't a hard set to put together and I love the look of the cards.

Have you thought about doing a HOF set? I'm working on 56 Topps and 53 Bowman Color. Probably will expand to 57 once I'm done with the 56 set.

I love the HOF set idea as I get the stars and it isn't so exhaustive a process

Since you don't want to do a complete set, how about something like a 1965 topps hall of fame set. It has Mantle and lots of other great HOF's.

What about an o pee chee set? Those are usually much smaller

I've thought about doing an all-star subset, probably will at some point. My favorites are the '59, '61, & '70. Also, as a kid I was always fascinated by the cards that carried the Topps All-Star Rookie trophies. Doing a set of those in some fashion would be cool. If a complete set is what you're after, the '68 Topps Game cards are afforable and small (33).

The Dan Dee set was the first thing I thought of as well. I have a friend that has a second set in a 5/6/7 condition that he is wanting to sell. You could PM me and I will get you two together. An all PSA 7 set would run you about double the cost as the Red Heart set you have been working on. When I made my set 10 years ago I only bought cards that did not have the staining. Pretty easy to find if you are patient. Another set that would be a challenge but not extremely costly would be one of the Red Man sets with tabs.

I know this is out there, but what about something like a 1921 w516 set? No backs, most are "Authentic" but a great set, IMO, with Ruth, Mathewson, and others. Good luck with whichever you choose.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The thought of doing part or a regular Topps or Bowman set like the all star or MVP cards or the HOF players doesn't appeal to me. I know that if I started with those cards I would end up trying to do the complete set. I'm not ready to tackle a 400-700 card set. I'm not a fan of the OPC or Red Man cards so those are out. I hadn't thought about the 68 Game card set. I'll look at those and see what I think about them.

Shane, buying a complete or almost complete set would defeat the purpose of the project. Searching for the cards is where the fun is when doing a project.

Mullins, I want to do a 50s or 60s set. I am more familiar with those players and cards.

Other visually interesting sets but have a few expensive cards: 1968 Topps 3-D and 1969 Supers.

Not quite 60's: 1970 or 1971 Kelloggs and 1971 Greatest Moments

1964 Topps Stand Ups might be a nice one. They're available and the set is not large. I started and stopped it recently but am considering starting over again with it.

Edited to add: Just saw your original post about the back of 64T Stand Ups. I can see that being a deterrent.

  • How about the 1965 topps embossed set? I know a few that really like the set. Its 65 cards, some graded. Its star rich and affordable. I would imagine there are a lot of raw foils out there waiting to be graded. I could see it paying off in a lot of fun ways.
Also, what about the 1951 topps red or blue backs? Good luck.

A nice set is the 1959 Fleer Ted Williams

80 card set. Only one toughie and for the most part affordable.

I'm also working on a 1953 Bowman Color set. Small set with 26 Hall of Famers a tough high number series and one of the best looking cards ever made.

The Musial might be his best card ever. The Mantle is super and then you have The Yogi, Whitey, and a jaw dropping Duke Snider.

    1971 Topps Greatest Moments

though not the '60s--it is close enough. And an extremely difficult set. 10 years in the making and I just moved to #6 on the current finest. 55 cards--many HOFers and 1 TOUGH Munson card in PSA-5 or higher!

I just looked these up for the first time and WOW what a gorgeous set! I wish there was something like this for hockey.

If you are ok with stamps, I would recommend the 1964 Wheaties Stamps Football and Baseball sets.

James, I am not familiar with the set size but what about a Deckle Edge set. I think those are pretty cool looking fronts (I have never looked at the back of one). Lots of 60's era HOFers.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. The 1971 Topps Greatest Moments looks like I nice set but it looks like it would be expensive to complete in PSA7. I'm not a fan of the 1965 Embossed, 1968 3D or the Deckle Edge cards. I don't want to do a single player set like the Ted Williams set. I realize that I am finding fault with most of the suggestions but it has to be a set that I really like. I am out of town working for the next 2 or more weeks. I'll think about it while I'm gone and hopefully make a decision when I get back home.

Steve--want to fill James in on the legendary '61 Fleer set? Steve recently completed it in PSA-7. Magnificent set !!

I had thought about the 61 Fleer basketball set. I saw Steve's set when he was working on it.

After thinking about this for the last couple weeks I have decided that I will not start a new set at this time. I'll continue looking for the last few cards for my Red Heart set. There are a few other cards that I have been thinking about picking up.

  • No brainer James, as Braves fan you should go after a 1954 or 1955 Johnston Cookies set. Great looking sets, love the Aaron's from both sets.
